...that is really unfair. The guy photographed his best mate and several other people dying. He had turned down huge money offers for the images. He provided them to the inquest to aid the enquiry. And now doesn't want those images exploited for money by an organization pretending to do this for some nebulous "public good." I don't see what is plonkerish about that at all.

Yes it is unfair, I agree, my comment is how he is being portrayed by the media, obviously they want the photos.

yep - these are the same media that stole some photo's from Guy Boyland's Facebook page, didn't check who was in the photo's, and then printed them as being Guy Boyland (who was killed in Gaza recently)

classy stuff! (not)

maybe there is a reason he doesn't want them released ......... oh and here's a photo of your loved one falling to their death ......... would you like that in colour or B&W

From my experience of photographing someone drowning I wouldn't give them out to the public domain either!

...and from what I heard TVNZ are prepared to go to court to get them, I wonder if they would be so keen to relinguish copywrite of their own in future. One news hound actually asked the owner "Is this about money?" on tv.

yea that doesn't surprise me. I don't like TVNZ very much. I wonder if the role was reversed if they would do the same.

They didn't let Geoff reply though, media reporting on their own story hardly going to be unbiased...

Geoff had friends on that balloon, he just doesn't want the images published. He has refused big money already.

Hi all, just found this NZ thread. A little intro...I'm an American but lived in London for a year and a half before moving to Mid Canterbury at the end of April this year. I do photography for fun. Mostly travel and landscape. Used to be into astrophotography when I lived in Colorado, and hoping to get back into it here. Love to shoot people, but don't get many chances.

Hope it's okay to share pictures here? Some of my favourites from before NZ:

1. Florence, Italy:

alledgedly something to do with the GCSB, but I'm not really convinced...

after some googling, I found this one might be a log-periodic antenna,

Usually, this antenna is constructed so the antenna terminals are located at the front (on the shortest dipole). Figure 19 shows a typical installation. The key features of this antenna are, first of all, its broadband nature, and second, its relatively high front-to-back gain ratio.

Thanks for the welcome. I am absolutely loving the gorgeous landscapes around here. I lived in Colorado for 10 years, but the mountains seem more dramatic here. Plus nowhere near the same amount of people or development = great vistas everywhere. And what awesome night skies you have here! I thought Colorado was dark, but this is something else!

Went out for a little bit last night. Way too windy to do much, but got this one off Hakatere Heron Road. Quick 30-sec exposure.

Those are some pretty nice photos Fuzz. If you ever head down to Queenstown you should meet up with Wazza, he's doing a lot of landscape stuff these days.

Thanks. Saw his work -- phenomenal! Although, don't think I can afford his tour right now. :)

Speaking of Queenstown, would like to get some vacation advice...

My wife, 7-year-old, and I are taking a week in early October to travel a bit. Spending 4 nights at Aoraki/Mt. Cook first. Then I was thinking of doing 3 nights in Queenstown, but now wondering if Wanaka would be better.

What we're looking for:
- Some great views for photography (something more than *that* willow tree)
- Some good day-hikes/walks nearby
- Decent selection/variety of restaurants

From what I've been finding out, all the things Queenstown is known for, bungee jumping, jet-boating, etc., we won't be doing. So why not stay in Wanaka instead of adding an extra hour of driving each way? Gives us more time to explore.

The plan would then be to hit Queenstown later (summer), on the way to Milford Sound.
