You talking about a few that are in the bottom of the finalists section? they get quite interesting under the Illustrative section.
If they are judged against pictures of the same type i don't see any issues. They are far more creative than I am, that's for sure!

When you say 'muted blacks' fill me in with what that means, have no idea what I'm looking for :)

well to me this http://infocus.org.nz …/15IL0715143_WoodR_85.jpg (external link) isn't a photograph. Sure most of the parts where taken with a camera and it's based on a photograph but it's also edited beyond what a photograph should be.

I don't mind some editing but at some point it goes beyond a photograph and then becomes art in itself. Just like a painting so perhaps it's considered digital art more than a photograph.

as for the muted blacks I am talking about a photograph like this, if you look at the histogram, see how it doesn't go all the way to the left. there are no black pixels within the photograph. that's what your histogram means. the number of pixels from black to white. it's lacking contrast which makes the photograph look a little flat. And to be hones that's quite a boring photo.

I'm wondering how much could be done in camera with that photo, then just adding some smoke look to it.
However, you have all seen my photos, so bare with me with my thought process here.

Would it be possible to do it prominently in camera?
Longish exposure, two busts of a flash to get the movement in the hand and string. with a nice table and background.
Then just add some smoke over the hand and head with a bit of blur?

ok, that makes sense with muted blacks, I think I will have to take more time and look at what the histogram tells me and how to use it better to my advantage. thanks for sharing your knowledge.

oh it's possible that most of it could be done within the camera. I would like to see the behind scenes of the photo shoot.

Glad to give my views :)

the histrogram is very useful tool, esp behind the camera. learning it will make sure that while your out in the field you can get correct exposure.

I agree, I was surprised to see the number of obviously composite images classed as photographs. Pictures yes, Photographs I hardly think so.

visited Whatipu beach today, started to rain so that kinda ruined it.
one thing i learnt was that the wind moves the camera and lens even when on a tripod. something i will have to watch out for in the future.

well if you want to, but while your upgrading your camera I would recommend your computer too. I wonder if they really see market for it.
