Hey Becca, I am sure you and your mother will have a great trip to NZ.

Tauranga/Rotorua are two different locations, around the Tauranga there is this https://www.google.co.nz …000000:0x0f00ef62249d19e0 (external link) it's about a 45min walk and you will see it as it comes in to the harbour. The walk is flat and easy.

Auckland, well you are going to be around the harbour as well, there are plenty of boats etc and people around and you could get to see this: http://walksinauckland.com …oads/2012/07/IMG_3098.jpg (external link)

It all depends on the amount of time you are going to be around these locations.

as for the other areas, I can't say sorry as I haven't been around them.

Hey Mark

good to see you are still around, using the camera much.

Thanks! I think we will probably take a tour from Tauranga where the boat docks to Rotorua. Mom wants to see the thermal features there but that walk looks gorgeous!

Hi Becca,

I live in Wellington and during the summer we get a cruise ship arriving almost everyday, sometimes 2 in a day. Most of them arrive first thing in the morning around 0800 and leave at 1800 so you'll have a full day in most of those stops I imagine.

Wellington is a pretty walkable city, most of the 'attractions' are pretty close together but since you're travelling with your mum, walking may not be the best option.

You can organise a day trip to see Sea Lions at Red Rocks - this is the area where most of the astrophotography work is done, although not helpful again because you'll be here during the day!

A more relaxed option would be to take a trip to the Wairaapa wine growing region and do some wine tasting tours.

Wellington's also got NZ's national museum and always worth a visit specially if the weather's not ideal outside.

Here's a pretty good resource for finding things to do in Wellington:

All the best!

Thanks for all the good information! I would love the wine tour (NZ Sauvignon Blanc is my favorite!) but I'm not sure Mom would! Good information for stuff around Wellington, thanks!

Hi Becca
Akaroa is orriginally a French settlement/fishing village and still retains that flavour. I should imagine there will be a bus ride to Christchurch, flat and still rebuilding after a major earthquake some years ago. Very modern mixed with some gothic traditional. Should be an interesting view if you get time.

Dunedin is inclined to be hilly, but there are penguin nests locally and a purpose built lookout to see them if my memory is correct. Bring your camera as NZ is very photogenic which you can see on my flickr page, she suits your style photography :)

Thanks, Chris! Mom would love to see the penguins, so maybe we will check that out. And, although I don't normally bring my big camera on cruises, I definitely will for this one! I can't wait to see NZ!

In the past, what would you folks think when I mentioned "Canon Service"?

Well, credit where credit is due.....

My 24-105 started playing up at a function on Saturday night, Error 01. lens communication error and the aperture blades wouldn't always return to fully open. Intermittent but got progressively worse.

I took it into Canon yesterday afternoon (Monday) and got an email this afternoon saying it is ready and cheaper than they estimated!

24hr turn around on a repair! Replaced diaphragm assy and key guides, replace the rear mount seal.

Outstanding. I have given them a lashing in the past for poor service (quite a few years ago) but this was outstanding.

Well done Canon.

So far so good.

Last time around, the body wasn't repaired; twice! ..... when I picked it up the 2nd time, I made sure I checked it.:-|

Perhaps they have up their game or perhaps they have more time because people have been jumping ship

For the what ever reason it's good

Thanks Joeseph, just luck, a ferry had left shortly before, and it's dinnertime :) You can see one person out side the pub.

well worth the asking price... :-)

on another topic completely: silly question time - what's a simple, free (or cheap) video editing software capable of tidying up .mov files from a Canon Ixus?
looking for some thing that's really easy to drive & can clip & fade/join files for someone's school project.

anyone have suggestions? we already have the files....
