No, I'm pretty sure that the problem was caused by the aperatus behind the camera. I obviously need more practice with erratically moving birds. The light was dim, and the birds were small, so I had the lens wide open at 300mm, which means not much DOF. I was playing around a bit with focus modes too. I got some wings and bodies in focus, but no eyes.

I did manage some in focus leaves though....

Few thoughts on the trip and photography.

1) you have no control over weather .... you get what your given
2) the best spots are the ones you see out your window while driving.... now find a place to park or be willing to walk for a while
3) treat every new trip as a scouting trip dont rely on google and other peoples photos then expect same results
4) relax and enjoy the trip ( I just wanted to get home after the interview)
5) better to focus on a couple of things than to try to capture it all

Scott I went from ChCh to Auckland and most of my photos are crap do i sell my gear and just use my cell phone like everyone else?

Yeah, mojo comes and goes, I’m not really thinking of selling my gear. Better weather, or something\somewhere new to photograph helps.

How did the interview go?

That's why I don't plan on selling gear and that's why it's just a hobby.

Some days I don't want to pick up a camera and other days I do. On those days (weeks/months) I don't doesn't mean the gear isn't useful and wont get used again. Just not right then.

Been doing it long enough to know that I will come back it to at some point.

Right next door to where we were originally based. We built the factory units next door (No 28) about 30 years ago, among the first to develop out there, it's certainly a bit different now!

Customer Support???.........What!!!.........having to deal with people.....that's going to be interesting, special training given??? :p

Mark it was orchard on other side 25 yrs ago and used to move the area around where you were.

The big area of land opposite us was cleared bare land and had the infrastructure (sewer & stormwater etc) put in when we developed, from memory there were only 2 or 3 other buildings up when we started.

We did a number of buildings out there, council and plumbers had problems with the ground conditions with any ferrous metals in the ground (galv. bolts on valve flanges, galv. steel water pipework). I think there were a few horse training tracks and something in the ground was very aggressive to metals.

One of my business partners had quite a large tract of land out there but was paying huge rates on it with no real sign of development happening, eventually sold it and about 10 years later, the area took off. The amount of development out there now is incredible.

Well done on the job. I've done a lot of work on motor homes out that area. Tested & certified the gas installations in every one of Apollo's fleet prior to the 2009 British & Lions tour. About 2000 vehicles which took months!
