The local camera store had a expo day today. Canon, Nikon and Fuji was there. (I think sony but didn't pay to much attention to them)
I got to play with the EOS R and the 50 1.2 R and the 28-70 F2 R
I have to say that it's a nice camera and those lense are also very nice. The 28-70 is large and it stands out against all the standard glass that they had.
The feel the camera in the hand (like all canon cameras) feels good the in hand I could use it very easily. With the 28-70 on it, it feels front heavy but that shouldn't be a surprise. Put the battery grip on it and it kinda equals the weight. Comments around the position of the AF button on the back to me is correct, it does feel like it's in the wrong place. But that's only because I am trying to figure out where things are. Once you are used to the location of everything then I am sure it would be second nature.
The viewfinder is very good (just remember I wear glasses now so eyesight isn't the best) but it's large, it's clear and to be honest it looks better than viewfinder.
I don't feel it's a camera that you can use without learning it first. When I went from the 40D to the 6D, I could pickup the camera and use it straight away. With the short time I had it, I found it hard to find away to control the AF points via the touch screen. And not because it's an action/movement I typically don't do, but because I found it hard to select the AF points. I could get it to change the type of AF points but not in the way I normally would via the 6D. So sitting down with this camera, it would take a couple days of going around and getting familiar with where the new settings are located.
If I had the money would I get one, more than likely. The camera has many more features (I like the manual AF focusing assistance) than what I currently use.
One thing I did check is how the camera works in manual mode, on the 6D it never feels like it's natural. On the EOS R, both dials for the aperture and the shutter are in good reach and if I as using it in manual I feel like I could. Also it's weird not to have the black out as the mirror goes up when taking a photo.
So while they was there I looked at the Fuji gear. (I like the old style dials and a quick way to access them) Fujifilm GFX 50R ok was in the hand but it didn't feel like the EOS R did. The shutter sounds loud but for me the layout wasn't natural. This will because I had never used a Fuji camera. But while it didn't feel like the EOS R it was still ok. I could use it and the AF seems to be quick. I also held the Xt-3 in the hands too and this is way smaller and it didn't feel that nice in the hand. the Fujifilm GFX 50S on the other hand, you could tell it was heaver and it felt really nice in the hand. I wish I could have given them ago and use them for a few hours. It would be nice to stick on a macro lens and walk around the gardens and see what could be done. Shooting medium format would be nice.
Didn't get a chance to look at the Nikon stuff.
