so getting a new computer, so many things to look in to. Do you know how much to spend? do you have a brand that you perfer? is this going to mainly for editing? does screen size matter?

If you are thinking on the photoediting side and the cash can go that far, look for a laptop that has it's own video card.

but most of it comes down to how much you want to spend. Come up with a number that's seems like the right amount you want to spend but just allow for a little bit more, just in case.

I'm thinking at the absolute most $2000, but prefer less.

Not aligned to brand.

Mainly Lightroom, and a bit of media, but editing mainly. Bigger screen best for my eyes - 15.6 I think, I hope...

Thanks

Thanks for that. Without going crazy will go for best specs I can afford.

Other question is - buy local Noel Leeming Harvey Norman etc, or on line? eg Ascent, and probably others

Thanks

For me, that would depend on pricing and warranty - no point paying too much when same item is cheaper elsewhere. on the other hand, you dont want to have to ship it back to Siberia if something goes wrong.

Dont be even remotely tempted to buy an extended warranty as the consumer guarantees act covers stuff for much the same period.

If it helps any, I bought a HP laptop recently from JB Hifi for travelling and the hard drive (ssd) is way too small really, so I'll be upgrading that at some stage.

Noel Leeming have one that sounds fine - 15.6 screen, 3.1 GHz, 16 memory, 2GB raedon 535 Graphics card and Win 10. Handy that I can pick it up tomorrow, as my current one is hopeless. Oh and it's $1498, 256 SSD.

My old HP laptop, a Compag Presario failed just a week or two out of warranty, motherboard I seem to recall. The place I bought it at weren't interested, so I wrote to HP in the States. They arranged for it to be couriered somewhere, repaired it, replaced the keyboard which failed after the mobo repair, and it still runs with Linux on it. It was in the days of Windows with the odd name which fails me. Have used to edit in Linux, but it's slow, and wouldn't meet specs for Win 10, and wouldn't run Lightroom I think.

I support HP because of that, having said above I wasn't aligned to brand!

HP is a good brand. I have been dealing with them for a long time.

Unless you know your way around a computer, buy local is is best.

I saw the one in the internet and it looks good.

Best of all, it works better than your current one :)

hmm I would recommend keeping all liquids away from it, just to be on the safe side.

Got my next piece of kit for panos …… levelling base picked up second hand manfrotto one. Will see in time if I need a nodal rail but at this stage I don't think so, they are also single row panos
