Her indoors and I went for a drive .......gold vats and waterfalls.

Water levels low and very bright shooting conditions.

I am surprised tho, an M6?

I had a good think around what I needed in an IR converted camera, came up with a requirement around being cheap, small & light, mirrorless preferably (no focussing issues after being converted) something reasonably modern, and could easily use all the lenses I currently have.

Just over $500 got me a M6 & a 15-45mm lens - M6 uses the same battery as my M5 so helpful there and seems reasonably straightforward to dismantle & convert to infra-red.
I'm thinking I may need the bolt-on viewfinder as primarily IR shooting is done in bright sunshine so remains to be seen if the LCD on the back is entirely unuseable in those conditions.

I've been having problems with the M5 for a while (autofocus just stops working intermittantly) so it will be interesting to have another EF-M lens to troubleshoot with - it might even be an option to convert the M5 to IR, and keep the M6 for visable light duties.

Looks like a bidding war has broken out over the failed 1D2 on TM, it's now reached $2.50c :-)

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Co-incidentally, I called into the vats on the way back from a funeral in Waihi on Monday. It was very warm!

I haven't been there for a long time. Keep meaning to go back. The last time would have been a GKPE outing I think.

Went for a harbor cruse on Friday night.

It was the lack of viewfinder that made me puzzled about your choice. If I am not using a tripod or pogo stick, (I am setting up a system to hopefully cope with me) I find, and did in the past when I had a compact Nikon with articulated screen, that I use the camera mostly to my eye. Frankly it is the most stable position as it has 3 points of location, but you would already know that. Preaching to the choir, me. Holding the camera away from me like a small steering wheel, just dosn't feel right to me even tho' I am aware the image stabilisation has become very good indeed.

Looks like a bidding war has broken out over the failed 1D2 on TM, it's now reached $2.50c :-)

I presume it is buyer to pick up! :)

I find with the M5, a fair bit of the time I'll flip the display out to 90° and hold the camera a bit lower than waist-level (or lower) to get different perspective shots than would be gotten from eye level. When I do this, the camera is pretty stable as my arms are pretty much dangling & I can hold my elbows against my body for support (I'm using my thumb to fire the shutter) All in all probably not best practice and probably looks odd too, but seems to work!
One of the things I notice about Karate tournament shots is how very ordinary shots look when taken from eye-level, and how much better they look when taken from lower viewpoints.

Got the M6 home today & it's previous owner never unwrapped the battery or charger so pretty much as new so I'm a happy camper.

as for the 1D2, if the buyer is paying, I'm happy... :-)

Back in film days I used to crouch and use flash to stop action at karate and judo comps, ice skating also. Did a day one time at a rink's end of season and had a wet backside and one wet knee from slipping while crouched :D

I do see your point about perspective and a stance the opposite of apehangers. I seem to remember for IR weren't you supposed to expose several stops over and there was something unusual about focus also?

Next silly question, why only bright days, why not nights when things give off heat?

Not a silly question at all, just that the sort of IR that is involved in photography is only related to light, not heat.
Some of the best sort of conditions for IR photography are when it's really sunny & glarey (the sort of conditions most visable light photographers try & avoid)
I find it really interesting how different surfaces reflect IR light better than others - foliage / leaves etc reflect really well whereas metallic surfaces less so, and you end up with quite a different contrast & feeling of depth between subjects.

So I have just had one of those "A HAAAAAAAAAAAAA' moments, then think jeez how thick and yet I loved physics. I have always thought of IR as being heat, which is correct, but it is also light and I have never twigged that that box I point at the TV and have had for umpteeen yrs, puts out IR light. It has just never clicked in my head before so thank you for that patient teaching.

You mention foliage, I have noticed some tree leaves seem to 'white out' hilites quite badly on a sunny day, not sure if I ever noticed it on film. It is most annoying.

Thanks for that.

Thanks Chris. I really enjoy seeing the spoonbills, and the 100-300 gets me a bit closer.
