Nice series and the 100-400, an early Xmas present for yourself :) Enjoy it :D

OK I said that but looking at flicker I think you have made a mis print :( Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Oops - wishful thinking!! My bad ..... typo ....

I did look at getting the 100-400, but the price put me off, for the amount of birds that I shoot. I am more of a "what you see, you shoot" person. Rather than going out deliberately to get birds.

When I read, and get interested in different techniques, eg HDR, I'll have a go. But don't have a "style".

I know what you are saying and I agree, I work in much the same manner these days but did once go 'hunting' for the right spot at the car races and rallies, weddings etc. Never been one for birding but am hoping to improve health and go somewhere with nice birds. Stick to your guns young lady, regardless of what the onlookers say :P

well I got the Ektachrome ($14.99USD for 36 frames from B&H) last year and only now just got it developed. I take some time shooting film it seems. Locally it seems to be ~$35 a frame.

This time around I got it sent to https://theblackandwhitebox.co.nz/ (external link) and they charged $30 to get it developed and scanned. It was scanned at 3130 x 2075 (6.5 MP) which is not bad. They do other sizes as well.

Ektachrome is colour slide film, rather than the negative slide film. This means the negatives are positive and to view the image all you need is light. Unlike negative colour film, which it has to get processed and inverted.

The B&W stuff is ilford and that's much cheaper. I got HP5 which cost $20 for 36 frames.

You can find other film for much cheaper as well. Here (external link) is a 36 frames of Kodak Colour plus for $13.

I do have 3 more rolls of film that I need to shoot. Velvia 100, Kodak 400tx and Ilford XP2 Super 400. I also want to get more gear as well. I would love to get a 6x7 or 645 medium format camera. A much cheaper way of getting in to medium format. These types of camera are much larger than the 35mm. There is more details in the photos as well. These cameras take what's called 120 film and the larger the format the less per roll.

I also want to have a setup like this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pnqF8G_wiM (external link)) and this means I will then only get film developed and not printed or scanned.

I also have a desire to try out a film called Cinestill 800Tungsten Xpro C-41 Color Negative Film which is a night time film (you can use it in the day time too but it puts a more blue tone on the end result)

A few people that I follow on youtube are:

Paul C Smith Photographer

negitivefeedback

Willem Verbeeck
https://www.youtube.com …/UCIvTu9cuf-NZFzHPJZPH23Q (external link)

I also have the kit to develop film at home, but I haven't done anything with that yet. Just B&W stuff but it's all about the fun of trying out something new.

Why do I shoot film? I work in IT so I am in front of computer all day. I started getting in to photography to get away from the PC. But even with digital you do have to sit down with the RAW files and process these. With film you don't have much in the way of editing. The type of film you shoot with is set in stone. Each film is different and gets you different results. Not all ISO400 is the same. Some might have less noise than others and some might have more noise and less contrast. Each film is a set ISO and this can't be changed between frames. If I want to change the ISO I have to change the film. I am an aperture priority shooter so, the 36 frames that I have are set at an ISO that means I have so shutter speed and aperture to adjust. If shooting hand held, then the shutter speed has to be fast enough. The limits are there and they force one to be creative.

The other thing is also the fact that I only have 36 frames. That's a limitation means one can be more selective when it comes to pressing the shutter button.

All of this helps with digital. I notice I take less now. And of course I still use digital. I can take more for less. But photography is about the end result not the medium to get there. Film is another way to get something, plus it's real. I can hold the negative in my hand. It's a process that isn't driven by a computer.

If your camera has it, try yellow or orange filter to make sky and clouds more interesting (in b&w). Also in monochrome use green filter to improve vegetation. I had a film camera with those filters built in, it may have been an Agfa. I also had a Kodak 116 foldong camera, my first, and shot only monochrome in that, colour was way too expensive.
