Bother.... the 24-70mm that has served me well for a number of years is now packing up...

I think it's a ribboncable - doesn't cause any bother if left at either end of zoom, but go in & out a few times and it'll intermittantly fail - spotted the aperture getting stuck closed down at one stage today.
(and yes I've cleaned the contacts!)

Time for R5 :)

Have you pulled a lens apart before? I would have thought it wouldn't be much worse than changing those highpass filters on your other cameras.

Or as Tony said an R5 (with 24-105) would solve that issue!

I've "mended" the 100-400 by taking apart & removing the trombone locking mechanism (was seized) but I'm reluctant to touch the 24-70mm as apparently it's the sharpest one that ever escaped the factory (moppies' opinion I believe) :-)

Looks like there are ribbon cables avail from China fairly cheap (i.e. less than $10) or an entire aperture unit with cable attched from US for around NZ$140
Both options would involve DIY as I believe Canon no longer support them.

I do like Tony's suggestion! suspect the accountant would not... might just look up YT videos on lens teardown/repairs and see whats involved.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Their service might be 100 percent. You don't know until you try.

True, and $400 is significant, but have decided to go with Photo Warehouse .....

thanks! funny I was having a look at that on FB the other day...
Looking at what's involved, I could probably tackle it, but the lens would need centering/adjusting afterwards.

8.30am decided to hop in car and take family for day trip to snow, simple plan drive to Waiouru see if desert rd would open and do a loop.
Left camera at home as I want to experience "snow" for first time and not worry about getting the perfect photo.

Once we got to national park the snow just appeared, fresh fluffy .... mountain's were in cloud but I expected that. Cars drove past with snow still on them.
This is what I had always wanted to be there when it was falling, but weather improved. I did get a bit of snow fall at Waiouru when we got there.

Roads all closed. Wasnt cold, very little wind until we headed up to the Bruce rd ..... and did the temp drop and wind pick up ..... bitter cold wind but not a lot of ground snow.
Its like there are several micro climates around the mountains, each area has it own weather.

So 2 hrs each way which is an easy day trip.

Plan now is to do a photography trip .....go down one afternoon and stay couple nights in Waiouru , dont want to be driving to far for sunrise. Was going to go down thur/friday but at this stage weather is fog/low cloud so Ive seen that when Duncan and I went down back in about 2008

I have found family trips and serious photography never work, cant focus ........
