I started into DSLR about a year ago and bought back then filters I could afford. Now that I'm getting more serious I want to ensure I have decent UV filters, but I'm still on a budget. My filter and lens set up:

  • 17-55 f/2.8 with B+W UV-Haze 1x filter (no MRC wording) on the inner filter so I'm assuming not multi coated
  • 10-22 f/3.5-4.5 with Tiffen UV Protection
I'm going to do some real world tests but want to know what to look out for.

I'm looking to get Hoya HMC UV filters, are these good? And does anyone know if these are better or worse than the NON MRC coated B+W? Should I be considering other brands, product lines of UV filters?

My only experience with the Hoya HMC filter is on my Tamron 18-270, my primary travel lens. It's a 72mm thread so I can't directly compare. I've had no issue with this filter yet and I consider my 18-270 a compromise lens so am not that fussed about a lower quality filter compared to my above Canon lenses. I'll trade up the 72mm filter after the 77mm's if need be.

Thanks for any help or suggestions you can provide.

Wish I had more time for this photography thing....

Thanks Wilt! I've actually come across this article before and forgot about it. Convinced me to step up to Hoya HMC at least. :)

I guess the next question is where does the B+W UV filter fit in, given it's not multi coated?? Do I keep or replace it?

I have the impression B+W is generally top quality what with brass construction and quality glass. Does this make my non coated one better than some multi coated brands or just simply the best of the non coated and inferior to all multicoated?

Maybe lenstip has answered my question?? http://www.lenstip.com …_results_and_summary.html (external link) What i think is the same as my B+W filter is ranked 11th!

I don't know how bad the non-MRC filter would be...frankly I didn't know they existed. Perhaps they exist, (like the non-brass B+W) for users in third world countries to afford.

As for the second question, pure speculation on my part but I think your assessment is right on.

https://photography-on-the.net …php?p=1412712&postcount=2 suggests they do exist. I bought my filter on a trip to NYC from Adorama so I'm confident it's legit http://www.adorama.com/BW77UV.html (external link)

I was a newbie back then, if I'd known more I would've sprung for the Hoyas

I did not doubt their existence. I stated that perhaps the reason for their existence was for sales in price sensitive third-world economies.

I don't use a UV filter at all. In the windy season here in New Mexico the sand and grit can blow something fierce. Then, I'll use one of these:

Does a haze UV filter look less clear & sharp than regular muli-coated UV filter ?

Picard, read the link which is posted in Post #2...it shows you the harm to contrast caused by any filter with inferior coating

Depending on size, you can get B+W MRC filters in alloy rings at a big discount from the brass ringed version. I'd go for the MRC wherever possible and you can get alloy versions from vendor Maxsaver on eBay. I've bought several and they are genuine B+W.
