I've seen the thread that shows people's photos on this lens and they are amazing but they are typically shot at f2.0 and so forth but not f1.4. Only a few are...which leads me to worry, should I just go ahead and send it back to Sigma for calibration or should I try it myself? The only reason I'm asking is because my event is on Oct. 23rd and I was hoping to have this baby ready to go before then and I know Sigma needs a few weeks to get the lens, fix it, and send it back. :(

The lens is sitting at my camera shop; I also chose this lens over Canon's 50mm 1.4 but now I'm like worrying like crazy for my event. ><

You haven't even gotten the lens yet or tested it in the real world and your worrying about focus issues?

This forum blows the sigma focus issues way out of proportion. Your seeing a small sample of the Canon/Sigma 50 1.4 population and very few people are going to post up if they get a good lens. Its only the bad ones we hear about.

Go out and shoot and see how the lens is in real life not on charts. If you have an issue youll know right away and can send it in or try some micro adjust.

Yah I'm a worry wart, sorry bout that but I do trust what people say on reviews and over the researching I just tend to question that's all. <<;

I 100% understand about worrying when you have an event coming up. The reviews and posts on this forum can cause that. What I was saying was off all the Sigma 50 1.4s that Sigma makes you have read about a very small number of them being bad in the posts on here. If the actual numbers were shown Im guessing it would be a very small percentage. So test your lens first as you would actually us it, don't just send it in before you even use it. Im sure Sigma gets a lot of them in that don't really need it and it slows down servicing time for the people that really do.

On a crop it's very good wide open but on FF I would rather stop it down a bit to f2.2. It's bitingly sharp there. The bokeh is lovely mine didn't exhibit any focus shifts. Only reason why I upgraded to the 50L is the faster apertures. My 50L is amazing by f1.6.

I have tried 5 sigma 30mm's and cannot find one that is good. 2 came from adorama, one from tri-state camera and 2 from a local shop (got tired of paying for return shipping). None could consistantly focus at any distance.

On the other hand I know sigma lenses work great on my camera I have the 10-20mm f4-5.6, and the 18-250 which are both percect. Heck the 18-250 was better hand held indoors with no flash than any of the 30mmm f1.4's Ive had.

Before people start talking about razor thin focus I have had great luck with canon's nifty 50 and the 85 f1.8 wide open. Even though both are f1.8 instead of 1.4 with the longer focal length they have an even thinner DOF than the sigmalux.

Just my 2 cents

Sigmalux tends to refer to the 50mm focal length and not the 30mm. Both from my experience and from what I've heard is very good.

..well my fear came true, I just stopped by the camera store to look at my copy they have under my name; it's very soft focus from 1.4 - 2.0...I guess I won't have my lens by the event. :(

I hope Sigma fixes mine. :(

Any chance of images as examples? The Sigmalux is a very good lens.

I didn't get to take the camera with me; it was the store copy of their Canon XSi, but I would have showed you guys if I had it. Is it different from each camera body how the lens react? >>

Not all cameras and lenses are made with the exact "specifications" so the answer is I'm afraid so.

I don't often shoot my Sigmalux at apertures wider than f/2 because I don't need to; I use it mostly on FF and the DOF is thin enough at f/2. I've used mine wide open, however, with good sharpness.

Send it to Sigma, they should get it working well.

I don't think that I would put myself in a position where I had to use unfamiliar or untested equipment in a situation where others are depending on the results. I would hold off using this lens in a professional situation until you knew how it was going to work for you. I think of this more as a personal responsibilty issue then and equipment one.

I did own the nifty fifty beforehand and well thought it was time to upgrade to the 1.4. I depend more on my primes than my zooms if anything and I just needed something to have on my event date. I'll survive with my 18-55mm/85mm. ><
