Also, should I go ahead and get my copy of my lens or should I pay the $35 shipping fee back to Sigma from the camera store? >>

go get the lens and try it on your body, every camera and every lens are a little bit different. Also you can't tell much about a picture by looking at the lcd, you need to load it on a pc.

Just my 2 cents

I have tried 5 sigma 30mm's and cannot find one that is good. 2 came from adorama, one from tri-state camera and 2 from a local shop (got tired of paying for return shipping). None could consistantly focus at any distance.

On the other hand I know sigma lenses work great on my camera I have the 10-20mm f4-5.6, and the 18-250 which are both percect. Heck the 18-250 was better hand held indoors with no flash than any of the 30mmm f1.4's Ive had.

Before people start talking about razor thin focus I have had great luck with canon's nifty 50 and the 85 f1.8 wide open. Even though both are f1.8 instead of 1.4 with the longer focal length they have an even thinner DOF than the sigmalux.

Just my 2 cents

Love your forum name that was one of my grandmothers favorite sayings.

If the point of focus was supposed to be on the Sigma text rather than the bag on the left in the first set of test shots, it appears to be front-focusing.

It was supposed to be on the box on the first set; and then my friends face but I let the camera do the AF on it; now I'm gonna upload the photos where the focus point was just dead on center.

f1.4 - Center focus on Pokemon on the tag

f3.2 - same focus point

f1.4 - center point on the address

f2.2 - same center point

it's front focussing (slightly) at close distances. means the focus is occuring before (closer to you) than where you are focussing.

This is fairly common with this lens. The distance you'll be working at is critical though. You may find that at a greater distance - say 1.5m or more the front focus may have dissappeared. The amount of front or back-fcous with this lens varies with distance.

Around a third of Sigma 50's require some form of calibration (see the poll results below), but focus shift (focus shifts as you stop-down from 1.4 to 2.5) seems to be a design feature of this lens type as it is with the 50L.

If you play around with it you'll probably find you can manage any focus quirks with the way you shoot at different distances. Don't expect miracles though. The lens is significantly "softer" from F1.4 to F2 and kicks up drammatically in sharpness thereafter..that "softness" though can give a very nice dreamy quality.
