Have you ever asked how many brides (and grooms) actually want to see pictures by the end of the night? I'll bet it's a very low percentage. That's probably the last thing on their mind.

Not yet. Still seeing if its feasible. I think I may offer it as an a la carte option once I get more traction.

I agree. The idea of having all the pictures done by the end of the night sounds great, but as a bride I would wonder how carefully the pictures were edited receiving them so soon. I'd rather look forward to getting the pictures a couple weeks later edited beautifully and completely. Am not opposed to the suggestion of receiving one edited image as a surprise for the reception though...that would be lovely.

I think this would definitely lower the perceived value of the effort that goes in to editing... then no doubt some people would be expecting the "the real edits" later... and if something wasn't perfect, B&G would be more likely to ask for changes because to them it looks like shoot & burn, even if there is a guy editing shots throughout the day.

yeah no doubt everyone wants a little distance from wedding "stuff" immediately after the wedding...

It is definitely possible, I have seen it done before. However it was very long and by the end of it, the guests had lost interest.

Is it easy to do? No. But 8-10 hours would definitely be enough if you have someone dedicated to the editing. Our company specializes in video same-day-edits, and we use three people. Two of us are the dedicated shooters, and the third mostly does editing. She also does a little bit of steadicam work during portions of the wedding as well. I'm sure if you did a similar setup for photo, you could make it work. Obviously you would need a very skilled editor. It would actually be a benefit to have everyone dump their photos to one editor because the editing style would be consistent.

Now, as for whether or not this is something a bride and groom would WANT? Well, I think that's a little more debatable. They already have to sit through one slide show, would they really want to sit through another? It might be cool, but I definitely wouldn't make it too long, or you're going to lose the audience's attention.

We recently did a same-day video and photo edit, but only used a handful of images since our lead photographer only had time to edit during the reception. http://vimeo.com/user708621 (external link)

I think that is not a good idea on so many levels. To edit and show SOME, just for the sake of advertising your talents, yes. I could totally see the benefit to showing perhaps 10 of the best shots. But just enough to tease and "up" the anticipation. That would work, but to deliver complete final product? No, and hell no. Shooting a wedding is stressful enough without throwing THAT in there as well. You can't rely on your assistants to achieve YOUR vision, and that is what the couple is paying you for. I can't imagine you would be happy with your PP if you had to do it all under those conditions. Very bad idea, and an artificial need, IMO.

o i should have added, taking this to the next extreme, before when we were doing japanese weddings (shooting hasselblads) we would shoot the wedding, develop the film, print up the 10x10s, make the albums and deliver the finished product the same day!!

Now that would really surprise the couple!!

What I would do is get one image finalized and actually FINALIZED, like final product, and give it to them the day of so they have a taste of the product to come, but anything beyond that is just undue stress. Batch processing 500 photos is just time consuming and pushing yourself like that could make you miss things you want to correct - that random picture you need to clone stamp some random thing out, etc...

I'm with gonzogolf on this one: I can't imagine letting someone else edit my photos (how would they know who the long-lost uncle was? Or the best friend from gradeschool?). Also, it does help justify my price if they have to wait until I'm all done editing. That being said, there have been occasions where the B&G have asked for one 16x20 print (taken during the wedding day) to be available at the reception, fully framed and matted for everyone to sign in lieu of a guestbook. Luckily there are places in Portland (OR) that can do this in 20 minutes or less...and I tell the B&G it takes an hour so I have time to sneak in some sushi from the place across the street!

I've been to weddings where the guests are given "formals" (their photos with the BnG) as a wedding favor. Printed and put into a card. Ive always wondered how this was done since the photos are taken at the beginning of the reception, delivered at the end. I've seen this at some ridiculously large weddings (750+ invited guests)

Well, if you can control the lighting conditions in every shot the same one batch process edit should do the trick.
