It is 31k

Walter de'Silva has worked his magic on countless Alfa Romeos, Seats, Audis and now, as head of design for the entire Volkswagen Group, is responsible for styling even more brands and their products than just about anyone in the industry. But he can now add one more to his resume: a Leica camera.

The iconic German optics company brought de'Silva in to give its compact M9 camera a bit of a make-over. Rising to the task, de'Silva refitted the camera in titanium, gave its screen a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, trimmed it in Nappa leather, a diamond-texture surface and even reworked Leica's famous logo, centering it above the lens like a hood ornament. A gun-holster-like shoulder harness completes the package as de'Silva follows in the footsteps of fellow car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, who designed for Canon and whose ItalDesign studio de'Silva's employers recently acquired.

Only 500 examples of the limited-edition, de'Silva-designed Leica M9 Titanium will be produced, fetching a suitably car-like $31,300 apiece. Zoom in on the images in the gallery below for a closer look.

I believe it's also sold out already.

I may be in the smaller percentage here but I don't like it. I am just not into this look at all (which is odd because I love all things titanium and I love Audi/VW industrial design)

I very much prefer the regular leica look. The M3 was a beautiful camera, and the M4 I think was the best design because they held on to it ever since.

For that price and to not get anything different performance-wise over an already expensive M9 I just can't get into it.

31k - 7k = 24k extra

You can buy an Audi for that much

Over on Rangefinder.com, a number of Leica geeks do not like it either, chastising it not only for its looks, but also for to its fashionable excess. Most of these cameras will never leave the living room display cabinet.

I think it's ugly, however I LOVE the two finger strap!

How much for just that? :)

Yeah keep the Audi for 10 years and the collectors Leica and see which one you get more money for in 10 years. I know its not the Audi.

Its a collectors item that collectors buy for an investment usually. I think its ugly too but maybe a good investment.

When I first saw the titanium M9, I wanted to email you and ask your thoughts....It's interesting to guage people's reaction to it. I like it...A LOT! But then again, I go for that kind of weird stuff  Dave Farkas has a few pics of it on his blog: http://dfarkas.blogspot.com …day-1-leica-s-system.html (external link)

From what I understand, the titanium M9 is a concept camera to test the public's reaction for possible M10 design ideas. There is a black version that I think is really sweet! But we'll see how things turn out....most Leica users seem to want a real chrome future M10 similar to the chrome Neiman Marcus version (but without the ostrich) http://www.dpreview.com …lecian9specialedition.asp (external link)

Personally, I'd be happy to get my hands on a regular old MP and a 50mm summicron :D

My next Camera is probably going to be an M9 and either a 35 or 24mm lens. Its what a camera should be and if Canon would only make a body without all the crap on it I would be one happy camper. Something with say FF 18MP, NO VIDEO, NO FPS, No Auto exposure and 1 degree spot meter, ahhhh no you're talk'n, but hey, it ain't gonna happen because its the bells and whistles that are what sell to the masses.

Agreed! I am still contemplating selling my lot for a M9 and a new 35 1.4 asph yum.

Yeah, I need to spend some $$$$ for tax reasons but I don't know if the $$$ is there this year. Sometimes I pay Uncle Sam or Calumet Photographic if ya know what i mean. I'd rather give it to the later.

Agree, the M2/M3 for the film advance lever alone are fine looking cameras. I have the iiif, which I love, but I hope to complement it with an M2 in the future sometime.

Yes, very familiar with Leica's vanity pieces, and I assume profits go into R&D for the company's more 'proletariat' offerings. Actually, while living in Bangkok, before I knew much about Leica let alone rangefinders, came across the M6 commemorative edition for the King's 50th anniversary of his Coronation, and it was pretty stunning…gold top plate and maroon leather; photos on the Internet come off as saturated and thus gaudy, misrepresenting what is actually a very classic look.

The Neiman Marcus version is so much prettier.

Taking photos with a fancy camera does not make me a photographer.
