I installed a new Canon MX 340 printer/scanner to my laptop so I could scan some old pictures in to my computer. I deleted the old drivers from the previous printer and now CS3 does not boot up. I can print to the new printer, but when I try to scan, it tries to open CS3 and then CS3 fails. I tried to let Windows figure out the problem and this is what I got:

Files that help describe the problem:
C:\Users\Chris\AppData\Local\Temp\WER267D.tmp.WERInternalMetadata.xml
C:\Users\Chris\AppData\Local\Temp\WERB20A.tmp.appcompat.txt
C:\Users\Chris\AppData\Local\Temp\WERC637.tmp.mdmp

Lightroom still works just fine, but I really need both programs. Anyone know what I did wrong?

Reinstall CS3 :)

Sounds like a driver or dll was overwritten or deleted. If you installed the bundled software it likely took ownership of one of the common dll's. Maybe even replacing and older library with a newer one. Try uninstalling and then reinstalling CS3.

Yeah, I've done that three times and the same error each time

Did you install the packaged software (printer)? If you did, I would uninstall it, run CCleaner registry and then when reinstalling the printer, search for the drivers alone on the CD/DVD and not run the installer. Then, do the same with CS3 - uninstall, clean up with CCleaner, reboot then reinstall.

I'm a little nervous to try CCleaner.
I did use the packaged software and let the program do its thing.

I've used CCleaner on over a thousand computers and so far it hasn't broken anything. It only deletes missing links and orphaned keys. When you reinstall the print drivers, just let Windows search the disk for the proper driver. Then, install only the scanner software. That should be pretty safe.

I'm assuming a Windows computer.

Did you first properly remove the printer from the system before "deleting" the drivers?

Was it an HP printer, as HP's can be extremely tenacious and troublesome when you try to remove them.

I second the recommendation for CCleaner. I have used it once a month on my office and home PCs for the last 5 years and they run as fast as new... no hiccups, no errors.

Do you have to know what you're doing with CCleaner? I mean, is it going to ask you if certain files should be deleted? I wouldn't know how to answer that. And to Chas, it is a Canon printer and I used add/remove programs to get rid of the files.

When I first used CCleaner, I was timid and went file by file, registry issue by registry issue. Now, I create a system restore point ( I do this before ANY software install/uninstall) and just let CCleaner run, at all default settings.

Is the printer removed from Printers and Faxes as the default printer or is Windows still looking for it?

Like Chas said, just make a restore point before cleaning. CCleaner is pretty reliable at default settings and it's never broken anything that I've noticed. Worse case it will delete your old cookies, passwords and forms so you'd have to reenter them (like for PotN sign on).

Well I finally got up the guts to try CCleaner and I'm still in the same boat. I've done the registry scan and the Windows and Applications scan and then removed CS3. Then I ran the scans again and had the program fix the errors it found. Then I loaded CS3 again and I'm back to square 1. Every time I try to open CS3 I get the same errors as before. Can anyone help me?

Well, that sux :( I've looked up similar issues and nothing seem to come up. Perhaps it was a perfect storm that created the problem. I'm still of the mind that something was overwritten and Windows is not deleting the offending file because both pieces of software (and maybe something else) use the same file. I have two more idea's.

The first one is to remove both programs using this (link (external link)). Delete absolutely everything it identifies. Uninstall the printer software, the driver and CS3. Go to C:\Program Files and delete Adobe folder after uninstalling. Do the same with the Canon software. Next, reboot and run CCleaner again (Registry and Cleanup). Reboot again. Install just Adobe CS3. Do not open programs yet. Go here (link (external link)) and install all updates. Every one for CS3. Reboot again (even if it doesn't ask you to). After reboot, does CS3 start? If no, then the problem may not actually be the Printer software but some other misconfiguration. If yes, you're going to have to install 'just' the Scanning software and the print drivers themselves. DO NOT use the setup installer to install the print drivers. You'll want to install the Printer manually and point it to the CD for the drivers. Windows may actually have drivers for that printer.

If the above doesn't work you may have corrupted permissions, ownership, registry or even more serious problems like an undetected rootkit (virus or trojan). In which case, I would backup everything and start from scratch. The printer software and drivers should be the very first thing you install after doing so. Then updates, then CS3.

I hate to insult your intelligence, but did you reboot your computer? Those files are temp files and usually get created when an app or device is started. It's usually best to reboot the computer whenever I uninstall/install an app or driver.

MaxxuM,

I agree with your opinion that something was overwritten because this problem started immediately after installing the printer software. When I tried to use the scanner, it automatically tried to open photoshop and then the error followed. I haven't been able to use photoshop since:(

Thanks for all your efforts in trying to help me with this issue. I followed all your instructions and used the links you provided, and did all the reboots like you said, and I'm still having the same problem. It must go deeper than I can navigate. On the plus side, my laptop is running faster after following your recommendations:)

I will most likely start over with the recovery disk after backing up all my files to an external hard drive.

Thanks again for your time.
