I was thinking about buying a 80gb Solid state drive to install Win7 and my programs. Currently this information takes about 60gb on my hard drive. If i move all of my pictures, movies, music, docs, etc, to a seperate drive, will I see a speed increase by having the OS and Apps on a solid state?

yes, you will gain performance. I am waiting for SSD to drop to around $150. Right now i can't justify spending $300 for a small HD.

It will definitely speed things up - Windows loads faster, programs launch quicker, Photoshop plugins launch quicker. I have Win7 64-bit with TONS of programs (no games, just the usual Office, Photoshop with plugins, Premiere Elements, lots of utilities, etc), and it only takes 18.5 gb on my 60gb Vertex 2. I disabled hibernation, and moved the pagefile off the system drive and onto the HDD.

Not sure what files/programs you have, but look to trim down unnecessary files, and then buy the biggest SSD you can afford.

I've seen 90gb SSD going for less than $200.

Solara, why would you move the page file to a slow spinning disk? The only time i'd do that is if I had heaps of RAM and a 64 bit OS.

I understand SSD is the way to go if you can afford it.. :D

Tim, if I have a 320GB HD, how much should be ideal for the main drive? is 120gb enough? win 7 64bit plus LR3, CS5, Photomatix and some other related programs.

I currently have only 30gb on my main drive (C:), and its driving me nuts when I process in batch as CS5 maxes out the HDD, so I transferred my scratch disk to another drive..now the problem is its very is slowwww

Not sure Stevie. I find I max out my CPU (quad core Q6600) way before I max out my disks when I batch process, I process from one disk to another. Hard disks have similar throughput for large files, it's really for lots of small reads and writes the ssds are really helpful.

Laptop, yeah, get a desktop with a few internal drives. I have a 400GB drive as my OS drive, but I only use the outer, fastest 30GB. Overall I have 4.4TB of storage in the machine, across four disks. I plan to add an SSD at some point, maybe this year, maybe next. Since I went to a 12MP camera, from 18MP, my current PC will last a while longer.
