The 5D in the US = $3,200.
My estimation of the price where I'm from = $4,000.
The difference is $800.

There are no taxes for the importation of the camera. Also, I expect the camera to be available here 2-3 months after the launch in the US.

Would you risk not having the warranty and returning it to the US (in case of a problem) and waiting fews months for a saving of $800.

What would you do.

Got a spare? How's Canon's local repair service (can you expect to get a camera back relatively quickly, or will it sit there a month or so)? Are you going to be returning to the US within the warranty period (permanently or otherwise long-term)? Do you need the 5D's features now? If you need it, or local Canon service is slow, get it from the US. If you want it, and the local repair service isn't bad, get it locally later and let the Americans be the ones to find out about firmware bugs/faulty components.

Good thoughts there Jon (as always).

Doubt there is even a local service center, too small of a market, they probably send it to somewhere else for repair. Good suggestion to check on that.
And frankly I don't need it at all, just want the wides to be wide (no I'm not going the EF-S route).

Thanks. We aim to please. And I'm not going EF-S either.

If you are from Canada, I spoke to a Vancouver dealer yesterday that said it will retail for $4499.00

As time goes on, I am becoming more and more inclined to buy online from the States and save bundles. Warranty and shipping are not an issue thankfully.

This is one area where the price in Denmark actually compares to the US price. After a while at least.

Currently the price for 1D MK II in US is $3900, in Denmark the price is $4100 so that camera I would not buy in US even if I where there in person. Actually if I bought it in person in B&H the price would be approx $4200 ! Hehe more than in Denmark.

As for 5D I would probably not risk buying this from US the first 6 months due to the reasons Jon mentions, let the americans sort out the bugs ;) And then after 6 months the price in Denmark might be closer to the US price just as for the 1D MK II.

Lenses is a different matter entirely.

And no EF-S for me either ;)

Hehe, but anyway. The 5D does not really interest me now. If I am upgrading my 20D it will be to a 1D MK II or 1D MK II N. And since my work situation are changing soon I expect I could afford one of those within the next 6 months :D

Also keep in mind that many over-the-counter purchases have a local/state sales tax added on, and this can be as much as 8-10%. If you make an online purchase and have it shipped across state lines, then in some cases you can skip that tax. It depends.

Hi Bob ,

I'm not in the US, so will be ordering it online.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Oh, then the difference is $700 instead of 800.
