Finally got my 7D. Pretty excited, now I just got to figure out the best settings for this body, and read the manual.

Any generally common tips from any other 7D users out there in regards to the idiosyncrasies of this particular body?

Read the manual and read the links found in the sticky, a few have some links to videos.

Congrats!

Are you able to use it? I'd run out to any store and get a card if I had the 7d sitting idle..:)

Yeah, I've already started reading. Going through the custom functions right now. I also purchased a pair of Maximal Power batteries that work perfectly like you posted somewhere as well. Great recommendation!

I had CF's from my soon to be departed 50D. :p
I do however, need to get more as I only have 2 8gb right now, and I can see needing a bigger card for video probably.

Hopefully you get your CF cards soon!

I have an 8 year old 256mb CF card from the G3 I traded into the loyalty program... It takes around 8 seconds to write one raw file

I can't wait to see what UDMA speed is like...

It is a complex camera with a steep learning curve so just:

  1. Refer to the manual a lot
  2. Take lots of images.
  3. Do a lot of self critiquing.
  4. Then refer to the manual again.
  5. Take more images.
  6. Return to step 1.
Because of the very high resolution of the sensor, things will show up that you probably have not noticed before. These would include:

  1. Camera shake will be much more evident if you do any 100% pixel peeping.
  2. Resolution limitations of some lenses that looked just fine if you came from a camera with a 10 MP sensor will suddenly look not so sharp when pixel peeping.
The solution to the above issues is to quit pixel peeping so much and use a tripod. If you decide that better glass is something that you also want, the 7D will take full advantage of the improvement in sharpness that a lens with better resolution offers.

I pretty much repeat myself for every "new 7D owner" thread. You'll need to learn and understand how the focusing system on the 7D works. I've seen many users get frustrated from OOF pictures because they do not understand the system nor know how to set it up for THEIR use. The below link is a start, it was written by a guy who shoots birds. It will be similar if you shoot sports.

Shoot one-shot, with a picture style variant using portrait as the basis, but bump up the contrast +1 and saturation +1, and shoot raw+jpg, ISO 200-400, manual mode set up for the lighting at hand, a bit to the right, move the AF point to where you want focus, and use either single point or spot point, f1.8 to 2.8 or so, good lights and flash.

If you don't like the JPG, go to the raw and adjust accordingly, then post process accordingly.

I would start with that anyways, but you may have to tweak from this point.
