I've owned and used a set of ten EOS lenses for the past few years.

17-40L - 5D UWA and main lens on 1D
35L - Fast Normal prime on 1D
50/1.4 - Rarely used
50/2.5 CM - Rarely used
24-105L - Main lens on 5D
85/1.8 - Basketball
135L - Volleyball
70-200/2.8 - Not used all that much, mostly portraits
300/4 - Not used much since getting 100-400
100-400L - Field Sports

My 1D4 is pretty indifferent to ISO setting up to 3200/6400 kind of range. I'd like to cut down on owning so many lenses. I find that a lot of the lenses I own get very little use. Others were useful for their speed but can be worked around with enhanced ISO capability.

So my new plan is to reduce 10 lenses to 4.
16-35/2.8L II
24-105L
70-200/2.8 II (with a 1.4X TC II)
100-400L

My thinking is that the 16-35II replaces the 17-40L, 35L and 50/1.4.

I don't really do much macro stuff so the new better MFD of the 70-200/2.8 II replaces the 50CM and the 300/4's close MDF.

The 70-200/2.8II replaces the original 70-200, 85/1.8 and 135L. With the 1.4X TC it replaces the 300/4L.

It will be nice to get down to four lenses. My only worry is that all four are kind of big lenses. I may regret not having something like a 5D+50/1.4 for some things.

But I supposedly have the Panny GF-1 for that.

Discuss.

I'd regret not having one fast prime for the odd time when I want to blur the hell out of the background.

You could also cut out the 100-400 L if you went with a 2X II or III for the 70-200 f2.8 IS II. I would then add a 35 L in there as well.

Sony A1, 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II, 70-200mm F/2.8 GM OSS II, 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS, 35mm f/1.4 GM, Viltrox 16mm f/1.8, 1.4X TC, Flashpoint flashes

I do not think the 70-200/2.8 II with 2X TC would focus fast enough for field sports. The 2X TC cuts AF speed by 75% so I suspect the 100-400 will remain my field sports lens.

I would then add a 35 L in there as well.

I have a 35L that I just sold. I rarely use it below f/2 so IMO I can easily live with the 16-35L for these shots.

100-400L

bear in mind that the 17-40 is lighter and has at least as good if not better centre sharpness than the 16-35 and as you already said you dont need the speed

Ditch the 100-400 and get the 2x TC 3 when it comes out

You could possibly even drop the 70-200 from that. My usual "universal" lens kit is the 17-40/24-105/100-400. I've hardly touched my 70-200/2.8 and 300/4 since I got the 100-400. The 100-400 is not quite as good optically as the other two, but it's so damn versatile.
