I just purchased these Canon brackets, one at a time, on Ebay... Haven't used 'em except to take the 2nd photo of the camera and bracket that you see in my previous post... To date I have been using, and will continue to use my Newton Bracket, it flips the flash unit in either horizontal or vertical position real quick...

Where as, these Canon brackets have the flash unit fixed in this one side mount position... If, for portrait, you tilt your camera with this assembly, to be in a vertical position for portraits, the flash will remain on top... I haven't seen the difference in having the actual flash lens vertical or horizontal...

If your concern is some side shadow, you're probably right...

However, I'm for having a little shadow visible, in exchange for the convenience of the rigidity that Canon bracket bolt offers, as it is specifically made to attach to the Canon flash unit... I haven't found any other product that connects to that threaded bolt hole that is on side of the 580EX II Speedlite.

By the way... I'm ambidextrous, and don't have any particular preference where the shutter release button is, top or bottom... In this case, I keep the flash on top for portraits... Certainly wouldn't want it to be on the bottom... Hope this works for you too... Cheers!

Indeed being mainly event/party photographer, unevenly distributed lights have always been my problem whenever shooting on portrait mode, i might give this set a try to see if it can help me elimate that small problem. Thank you for sharing.

I got one of these folding wagons (external link) at Costco.

Really a back saver when you've got large lenses to tote around and you're schlepping all over an airport's property.
(Mine was about $25 less than this ad...)

This is one of the most interesting. Made by Survival Straps (external link), a bracelet of 16' of 550lb strength paracord, woven into an inch-wide bracelet, or a 1.5" wide bracelet if you wish, with even more paracord, 25', for emergencies.

Just ordered one, since I can see it come in handy almost anywhere I make my rounds.

You could buy again. Most people get both black and red one depending on what occasions to use them. :)
