Get 35L or 5DII? ... or SIGMA 30 f/1.4?!!

Hey guys, I am in a dilemma. Should I sell my 7D and my 24-105L and get a 5DII or should I just sell my 24-105 and buy a 35L? Should I just stay with the 7D until the "rumored" 5DIII comes out or just wait in general? I got my 7D couple months ago and I really want a FF body.

I also have another question. I have heard the Sigma 30 f/1.4 is a great lens for its price compared to the 35L but it has a possibility of getting the lens with focusing issues and soft corners. Is getting the 35L worth the extra $1k? I know the build quality and IQ is guaranteed but is it worth it?

Btw two more questions: Does the Siggy work on FF bodies or is it like an EF-S lens? If I decide, to stick with my 7D, what are some good quality battery grips besides the OEM? I think the OEM grip is too much for what its worth.

Thanks in advance.

The 30mm is crop only. You'll hear most people tell you to either get the 35L for full frame or the 30mm for crop. I personally went with the 35L. I was wary of the focus issues and soft corners. The 35L is perfectly usuable from corner to corner at F1.4 and has a bit of a bump in sharpness up to F2.0. Then it is just wonderfully sharp from there on.

First decide if your going to sell your 7D and get a FF body or not. Based on that your lens decision should be pretty easy IMHO.... If I had a crop camera I would get the Sigma 30mm. On FF the 35L is a given.

Since im FF I have a 35L.

If you are wanting FF, then just buy it. If you buy the lens instead, you will just wonder if it would be better with FF.

Why do you "want" FF?

There's no need to wonder if it'll be better. IT WILL BE BETTER.

The 35L is worth every penny in my opinion. If you ever decide to go for an FF camera, you wont have to go hunting for another. Spend your money now and just do it once.

If you can, look for a used 35L. They go for about 1200. I got my for 950 but it had a crack on the front element. The crack is the size of a tiny dust particle. It didn't bother me as it was out of the image circle.

The Sigma does NOT work for FF formats. It is only designed from 1.5x (Nikon) and smaller crop sensor cameras like your 7D (1.6x).

A lot of people use after market battery grips. Sometimes they tend to be of good quality like the Zeikos 7D grip (external link). Unfortunately, it is not weather sealed like the original BG-E7. However, it is only $75 which is a steal.

Take note that it might not work with RRS or Kirk L brackets if you do ever decide to invest in one. (if someone has the zeikos grip & a RRS or kirk L bracket, please let us know if it works or not!)

Maybe you should be looking at a 5Dc. You'll find them much in the selling section of POTN.

Are you limited by your 7D (a wonderful camera body)?

Oh man, you still havent decided if you want a 7D or 5DII? I remember you sending me PM's about my 5DII that was up for sale a few weeks ago

Listen, I can tell that you really want to go FF. Buy a 5DII or take advantage of Canon's loyalty program (assuming they still have 5DMII bodies in stock) and get a 35L and see for yourself. If budget is a concern, rent the 35L and slap it in your 7D and see how you like it. I wouldn't recommend a 5DC, I think you'll miss all the bells and whistles the 7D has to offer.

I suggest to stick to taking photos and not worry about gear so much. Tell us exactly how the 7D is limiting you today.

Buy the sig 30 1.4. Best lens for the money on crop. Then get a 85 1.8 for portraits.

I had a 5dii and 7d and kept the 7d because it's WAY better for action or wildlife shots. The only reason I see to get a full frame is if you need the very best iso performance.

Why do you want full frame? What do you shoot? Those are the questions you need to answer.

Looking at your Fkickr (first 11 pages), I don't see a 7D giving you any advantage over a FF. I do seem some opportunities comparing the other way but not that many.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.
