Hi there,

I own a 20D and a G3.

On the G3 there is a function button that when you are shooting in JPG format and press it you can save the specific image in RAW instead of JPG.

Anyone aware of that function on the 20D?
That would be very usefull -

Thanks!

The 20D can't do that, but if you set a custom function you can change from JPG to RAW in a second or less. I forget which CF.

CF? I was playing around with custom functions and I don't remember anything like that . I will look into it- in the mean time if you can send me more details on how to set that up I would appreciate it.
Thanks!

Custom Function 01 - 1

Lets you change quality directly by pressing the "Set" button on the back and then using the wheel to change the quality. This shows up in the LCD "ON THE TOP OF THE CAMERA", not the one on the back.

No big miracle ... considering the time the G2 takes to write the image to the CF card
High speed mode in RAW is 3 SPF (seconds per frame).

Mind you ... I'm not bashing the G2.
But every time I handle my 20D I can just shake my head at the improvement over my G2.

As a sidenote ... I had quite an elaborate RAW workflow on my G2 ... but my experience with the picture quality of the 20D is that it's so incredible in large JPG (with decent lenses, that is) that I don't use RAW any more (unless for very demanding shots).

Best regards,
Andy

I'm not sure I'd consider that a feature worth having on the 20D as I've gotten more and more used to shooting in RAW or RAW and jpeg. No "after the fact decisions need to be made" with enough memory.[:)]

"The new PowerShot G3 offers photographers the best ever image quality. Delivering high definition and fast processing with a new imaging processor 'DIGIC' for enhanced picture quality, improved AF accuracy as well as speed of operation.

The 4Megapixel CCD sensor ensures the best image quality at the highest resolution and the DIGIC processor gives improved shadow and highlight details for even better quality images. Now the highest quality RAW mode is accessible even when shooting in JPEG. Immediately after taking a shot the image is displayed on the LCD, simply press the camera's function button and you can change to store the file as RAW, offering more options for highest quality processing on the computer."

Just take photos in RAW + JPG mode... youll get the best of both worlds,, just beware that youll use up more memory this way.

Yeah, when you left the G series you left the option to select RAW after the fact. As for RAW + jpeg, I shoot that and constantly ask myself whether it's worth the additional memory required. I justify it for other reasons, but if you went that route it would give you the option you left behind with your G camera. On the other hand, you don't have to have your stopwatch handy to make the decision, you can wait till you get back to your computer.

Sounds like you need to just shoot RAW, and have a tool that will batch process to JPG for you. I'm running a batch conversion in CS2 now, doesn't take long as long as you have a reasonably fast machine.

You cannot creat information that is not in the picture to begin with...jpeg to raw??? Only the other way around...The 20D does have defective Raw firmware however..at least untill the latest release last month.

Jeff, would you care to elaborate on that statement?

Dear Jeff,

Even the Powershot G5 offers the ability to ""save images shot in the JPEG format in the RAW format right after shooting if the camera is set to ..."

No one is "creating information" from nothing - the detail is still there for a limited amount of time, and all you are doing is asking the camera NOT to throw away that detail but to do the actual save as RAW.

The decision to save as RAW has to be made while the image is still displayed on the LCD screen.
