You can only manually select your focus point when you are in the creative zone. You don't really have to do anything in the creative zone if you put the camera on the "P" so you still have a virtually auto mode in the creative zone.

Yep, get out of the "basic zone", auto programs, and into the "creative zone", manually controlled auto settings. Then just sit in a room taking pictures of whatever while you tweak every setting. It's digital so you can take 1000 pics of nothing just to see what all of the settings do to the pics if you want. You'll learn a ton and get better pics as a result.

How do I set the focal point to the center by default? Thanks! Alan

Looks like the camera decided on a focus point on the frame, that's why I set the focus point to the centre one by default.

The camera has to be in one of the creative modes, like P, Av, Tv, etc... Once you have it in one of those modes on the top right of the back of the camera there are 2 small buttons. Put your thumb over the one on the right and then look through the viewfinder. Hit the right button. When you do the AF points should all flash or come on. If they do then rotate the wheel. That should cycle you through the various points. Once you have the center point highlighted hit the top right button again. That should turn off the glow on the AF Points. Then you should have that point selected.

THis only works in the creative modes. It won't make any difference if you shoot with the top horizontal dial set to one of the basic modes which use a small icon or the green square instead of letters.
