I'm just trying my 20D for the first time..and my comp won't see the cam.

I'm using OSX, and was using a 300D before, but for some reason, it won't see the camera...

Any help, these are important pictures...

You might try to insert the CD card to your 300D and see if they can be transferred there.

Other than that, a card reader might be very helpful.

Best regards,
Andy

Rather than trying to read directly from the camera, you may want to consider a card reader. They're cheap, fast, and probably alot less aggravation than getting the camera to talk to the computer.

Megapixels and high ISO are a digital photographers heroin. Once you have a little, you just want more and more. It doesn't stop until your bank account is run dry.

Better off with a card reader. You can get a UBS 2.0 card reader for like 10 dollars. I carry one around on me in my bag all the time. Works great and was a cheap buy to go along with my more expensive one that I bought a long time ago.

Card reader. Also if you use the Canon software install the version that came with the new camera, I don't bother with it at all though, it's pretty crappy.

Which OSX? There have been some problems with Tiger.

Read this bunch of posts. It seems to be the same problem with your answer POSSIBLY in the mix.

I agree. Card reader. But the Canon software that came with my 20D works just fine.

Card reader is nice but non-essential. I've used OSX 10.3 and recently 10.4 (tiger) with my 20D, no problems.

if you're importing to iPhoto, set the 20D communications to PTP (picture transfer protocol). If you want to open the card within the 20D as a folder, set communications to normal. connect the cable, then turn on the camera, and it should work fine.

10.4 (tiger) won't run the camera control software (because the 20D is newer than 10.4), but will run all the other software on the 20D disc (DPP, eos viewer, elements).

good luck,

David

For the simple fact that you don't have to waste battery power just to transfer data, over it's pretty valuable. And it's not like usb 2.0 is expensive. I got my multicard usb 2.0 card reading for 9.99.

Also, you need a card reader when the time comes to update the firmware on the camera.

Everything is working fine, as designed. The camera does not "mount" to the desktop like a USB connected flash memory device. When you connect camera directly, you need to launch Canon EOS File Viewer Utility or Canon Zoombrowser to "see" the camera in directory tree. Or just use Apple's free provided Image Capture utility to make a folder and download. It''s all in Canon manual.

Not only are these software routes inconvenient, not only does connecting the camera use battery juice, but the USB connection firmware on cameras is about 1/3 to 1/2 slower than any $9.99 USB2 card reader. Get a damn card reader and be done with it. SanDisk have a better rep than Lexar, Dazzle, or other brands, but just about any reader will do.

Hope that helps. Jack
