The skies have been very clear the past couple of nights, so at around 2:00 am on Saturday morning, I headed outside with a netbook, my S3IS, tripod and AC adapters for some fun shooting the stars. I was running Stellarium as well as PSRemote for the S3IS on the netbook.

I had two targets in mind. The first being M31, which was almost directly above me and Orion which I had to wait until 3:00 for it to rise high enough above the horizon and houses.

M31 was a complete bust, but was very happy with how Orion turned out.

Orion consisted of 10 images at 15 seconds (max for the S3IS), ISO 400, F3.2 (along with 5 dark frames) stacked with DSS.

After stacking this in DSS did you load it into Photoshop for post processing?
This image, to me, looks like it is straight from DSS without any processing. In other words, all the image data is in there but hiding from us.

Additionally, When I try to look at the Exif data all I get is that the image was saved with changes applied. When You save your picture from DSS you need to save it with "Changes Embedded", and then load your file into Photoshop, or whatever you use for image processing, and start by performing a histogram stretch to bring the image data into view. Once you do that you can start tweaking it to make it really stand out.
I don't recommend using DSS to make any color or luminance changes. Once it has loaded the Autosave.tif just save it to a 16bit tiff file, name of your choice, and then do all the post processing in Photoshop or whatever you use. If you don't have Photoshop CS I recommend using Gimp so you can work with 16bit files.

Thanks Tim.

I didn't know about doing further processing in Photoshop. I have Elements 2 and 4 so hopefully that will work okay. Today is our Thanksgiving in Canada, so will try doing this again later, probably tomorrow.

Elements won't allow you to process 16 bit images. You can download and use Gimp (external link) which is a Photoshop CS Clone, and it is free. Once you have done you're initial work there, then you can switch it over to Photoshop Elements if you want.

Happy Thanksgiving!
