Don't know if this has been mentioned here yet, but just a heads up for all you Facebook users. Facebook is in the process of giving users a high resolution download option for photos. I've already seen it here and there.

So, if you're uploading your photos in high res to Facebook and not downsizing them first, you're now giving your photos away for free.

Make sure you downsize.

Do you have an example of where this is happening? I just perused several profiles and their pictures and couldn't find an instance of this happening...

I just added a link of where i first saw it from..

and also, as of right now it seems to come and go. I've done the same thing looking for it. every once in a while I'll find it... I saw it on my page the other day. But I had to sign out and not be logged in to get it. Just tried it now and it wasn't there.

Obviously, it's a work in progress.

I think they mention somewhere that they'll be rolling this in gradually so not everyone will get it at once.

Thanks for the link. I haven't seen it on any of the pages I looked at... but will keep my eye out. I don't even typically upload images to my fan page... I usually just link to them from my zen site... So while it won't affect me a great deal, I do want to be aware!

Thanks for the link. I resize all the images I upload myself since Facebook always seems to screw them up (especially for high ISO shots) and they end up coming out pretty bad if I let them resize it.

I received this option last night when I uploaded a couple images. I went ahead and did it considering I had already resized it for FB.

You can still do the standard upload. The high-res feature is only another option.

Can you choose? I was under the impression that there was only one option... to upload. And whatever you uploaded is what would be available for download. I haven't seen the two different upload options yet, only the download option.

Yeah, you can definitely still choose. I had the two options available. They basically just say:

'Standard'
'High Res (will take 10x longer)'

it was just a radio button that you selected between the two. I haven't seen the download option yet.

Well it appears that the roll out of this hi res download is occuring as people upload new pictures. I just clicked on a picture that a friend uploaded to her personal page. It had the download link however the other pictures that were in that album did not.

It automatically goes to the low res download but offers you a choice to do a high grade upload. I don't get the impression that people using facebook are selling their photos there, I post a lot and my friends and I swap photos a lot, or tag them, usually of events where we want to share the experience so it's actually fine with me if it's not of commercial value to put in a high res photo if someone wants it. It's not a sneaky thing that fb is doing, you get a choice and if you don't take it, it automatically goes to the low res download and the pop up window shows exactly what is happening. It is actually a service that some people will want.

I noticed this the other day when updating my page. I still upload in low res, as the low and hi res versions looked exactly the same to me when I did a side by side comparison.

It might be involved with the services that are out there that will print photos to target and walmart. Maybe then the high resolution is used but just not shown.
