Lens to Fit Current Lineup for FF

I've been all over this forum for a couple of days but still having trouble deciding which lens to buy.

I have a 5Dc on its way, which is an upgrade from the 50D. I've upgraded to FF with the intent of improving landscapes and portrait IQ.

All my current lenses will fit the 5D except for the EFs 10-22mm and the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS (my current lenses are listed in my signature). My dilemma is how best to fill the gap created by the EFs lenses, for the FF?

I've been considering the:
1) 24-70L because of the f/2.8 for low light (but no IS here & apparently heavy)
2) 24-105L f/4.0 because it has a good range for portraits and can be used for landscapes.

I only realized as I sat to write this that the 10-22mm will not fit the FF - very disappointed in that as I thought I could use this for my landscapes on the FF.

I can buy a used 17-40L f/4 at a good price and now wondering if that should be my first lens for the FF. I thought initially it would be better to put this money into a more suitable new lens instead, until I found out that the 10-22mm won't do for the FF. Will I find 24mm wide enough for landscapes? Renting lenses to try them isn't an option where I live.

So now I really don't know which way to go and would really appreciate some advice. Thank you!

Yeah that was the lens (10-20mm) I had to sell upgrading to a 5Dii.

The 17-40 is a good lens, I preferred it on the 5D rather that the cropped 50D, how much can you get one for?

I'm selling mine as I have a 24-105 so can't justify having an L lens sitting there for the sake of 7mm

Jayrou,
I'd be saving $300+ in Canada. You make a good point about the small difference on the wide end tho.

I was hoping to get away with one lens purchase rather than 2.

I replaced my 10-22 with the 17-40 when I went FF. Still have the 17-40 ;-)a

The few landscapes I do shoot I don't shoot anywhere near at 17mm. I do use it very close in, usually.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

Remember that 24mm on a full frame will give you, roughly, the same field/angle of view as 17mm on a crop sensor; 16/17mm on full frame is generally considered really wide.

In that case the 24-105 or 24-70 will do you well..... its choosing what one is the hard bit, its almost as hard as choosing the 70-200 f4L IS or the 70-200 f.2.8 (for me anyway)

24mm on a Full frame is wide, but it doesnt distort as much as the 10-20 or 17-40, I actually like the distortion in certain situations.

I chose the 105 IS and the 70-200 F/4 IS , but still can't help wondering 'what if...?'

Its an agonising choice but i felt IS would stand me better over all.

Maximize the 5Dc's IQ capabilities by using primes - namely the 50L/85L II/135L. - it all depends on your budget and your preferred FL.

Thanks everyone - your responses helped me come to a conclusion with this for the time being but certainly not the one I expected.

I've purchased the used 17-40L after concluding that I need to experience FF for awhile first, before I can really know what I am going to want or need in terms of more lenses. This smaller investment for the time being is more practical in that I know for certain it will meet my landscape needs in the interim and I'd most likely keep it no matter what I buy in the future. (I'm keeping the 50D and all my current lenses so I'm in good shape for awhile)

Many thanks, I hated to ask the same old question but it really does help!

Actually 24mm on a FF is about 15mm on a 1.6 crop.

For the sake of accuracy, yes.
