The B-1A was fitted with the capsule, as part of the initial design to allow safer high-speed high-altitude ejection during the Mach 2+ dash. However that was replaced with individual ejection seats on the B-1B for simplicity. Also, if I remember correctly, the only time the B-1A capsule was used, the results weren't very good. One of the prototypes crashed, and the low-altitude ejection combined with a malfunction of the parachutes caused the death of one of the crew. As to how it worked, it was ejected by pyrotechnic means, i.e. rockets, above and behind the aircraft, at which point the parachute and airbags were deployed. The airbags cushioned landing, and also prevented sinking if the capsule landed in water
