Well I was able to borrow a 50D for this week. Looking forward to some good light. It was drizzling when I drove through Montezuma NWR, but I snapped a few pictures anyways. Not much within 50 yards, most birds were 150-200 yards from the roads (in closed areas). These few shovlers however let me takes their pictures.

Over-sharpened? I was playing with the magnetic lasso tool to just sharpen the subject of the photo. Is that poor technique?

General comments about the 50D....

Wow, what a step up from the Rebel XT. Love all the settings. The smaller steps in ISO settings are fantastic. I'm sure many of you are used to this with your upper end camaras, but this was a delightful change for someone like me.

Also, the AF is incredible compared to the Rebel. I was able to track swallows in flight (too far away to get good pictures) that my rebel would be searching like crazy for the subject. The images are still soft, but that is probably just a product of the zoom lens.

Next year when I finally buy a better camera body, I'm going to have a tough choice between the 50D and the 7D. I know there is a pretty sizable price difference, but I am tempted to make the jump.

I think the degree of sharpening looks fine here. I frequently use selective sharpening techniques myself (i.e. creating a mask of just the bird or some selected elements) - nothing wrong with that.

the 50D probably won't be available then once the 60D sales really start taking off, so start getting serious about the 7D

Ugh, I hope that isn't the case! I am not a fan of the new D60 body. Too small and "cheap" looking....oh well. Might have to go with the 7D. Too bad that just went up in price again.

Not oversharpened at all. Selective sharpening (like selective noise reduction) is very effective on bird shots. (I often reduce noise ONLY in the background and sharpen ONLY the bird.)
