First attempt ...

A couple of 'firsts' ... At the insistance of my wife, she wanted a self portrait ... also - the first time I fired up my new purchase - a Novatron kit with 2 lights, power module, stands and 2 umbrellas ... all for $20.. The ultimate Garage Sale victory..

Anyway - Never set up lights before - and have never taken a picture of myself - any suggestions (other than lose the hat) would be appreciated...

I think it's a great portrait. You managed to get at least a little sparkle in your eyes, despite the hat.
Broad lit...I'd mabye try one short-lit as well, just to see the difference. I prefer short lighting, but whatever.
To get super critical, the shirt is a bit wrinkly...thicker material helps with that, as well as a slight "tug" down at the front to pull the collar closer to your neck.
but...great job, made greater by being your first.

try removing the fill for a moodier pic...i think that suits the subject a bit more....

It looks pretty good. A small reflector down in front would help get some light up under the hat brim, a regular problem with hat wearers...

I agree with the reflector for a little more facial fill. I would also think that feathering the light on the shirt would tone it down somewhat and not draw the eye to it instead of the face. Well done
