One of my 350D/XT's has started showing these lines on quite a few (but not all) captures. This is a heavy crop with alot of noise from too much sharpness which I did to make the lines show up more. Any ideas what would be the cause folks ?

Could be a problem with a line of sensor pixels.
Could be a hair behind the lens, do you see it in the viewfinder?

I assume the first

Does that show up all the way across the image or just in a small portion of it?

Also, is it more visible at small apertures (large F numbers)?

Yes it's right acorss the image captured, you can see it on captures between f8-14. Stands out most at large apertures, it's not a hair and I don't see anything through the focusing screen either. It's not dirt or any other partical as I have checked this. It's also not the CF card as it's a known good card, I know it's the camera. Just don't know what caused it lol, it's not a problem as it will be fixed.

Just more of a pain than anything and I like to know what makes things tic.

Well I'm at a loss, still have the lines. Got the camera replaced, still lines. Tried different cards and different brands, still the lines. Maybe it is the lens somehow, it seems to be random though. It's not every capture, I've tried to reproduce every setting. Can't seem to work it out, a real pain when it's seems to be random and only happen every so often.

Will be having the lenses checked but I'm told they can't see how it could be the problem but they will check them for me anyway. They seem to think it's the camera but I've had it on 3 different cameras now under different conditions .

Will keep trying till it gets worked out one way or another, anyone have any ideas or other input ?

Hi, I have the same lines, just bought the 350D a fews weeks back. does not show up on all Images.

I have the Standard 55m USM lens and a 1GB kingston Card.

Would be interested if you find out what it is.

I've never had lines...until last night. I took a shot at twilight of my dog, and in the shadows (only in the shadows), I got some "banding" not bad, but I did notice it, particularly when I was adjusting in post. Fixable, but a bummer, on an otherwise great shot.

I still have no real answers sadly, I've spoken to Canon about it and they feel it's the lens. Have spoken to camera repair techs and they think it's a write error/card issue maybe or the camera as they can't see how a lens would affect the image in this way. Still trying to find out, I didn't really want to send the camera away to Canon and haven't as yet.

This is not what you want to hear, but it could be a failing image sensor.

Maybe a bad batch of sensors supplied to Canon. If it's the same on different cameras?

It might explain why some have shots at ISO100 that are way too grainy too. I have had a few shots at 100 that looked like they were taken at 1600. Even in good light conditions. Hmmm

I don't know about it being a failing sensor Bob unless lots of them are dying already. I've had 3 350D/XT's and kept 2 so far, but all 3 cameras do this randomly. Not quite sure what to do, it's a pain but it's only every so many captures. I'm told if I send it to Canon it's a min of 6-8 weeks turn-around for me, could be longer as the problem is random and hard to repeat. I don't want to lose a camera for this kind of time frame.

Seems a couple of people are having this kind of problem so that already tells me it must be the camera and not cards/lenses. I would like it fixed but seems I'm just going to have to live with it.

If anyone else finds out more with their units what the problem maybe please let me know.

3 Peter , I bought 1 350D, then bought a 2nd 350D. Then someone noticed the banding/lines in some of my images, so I looked at more of my captures and found it on several every so often. So the 2nd 350D wasn't very old so I took it back to the store for exchange, no biggie. The new replacement 350D still does it also, I look back at my captures now with my first 350D and notice it's on some of those captures also. So I have 2 350D's but have found the problem in 3 cameras in a row, made in different batches.

I guess it's not that bad, just really frustrating. I just enjoy using my camera too much to lose it to Canon for that long and maybe get it back with the same problem.

Maybe its an environmental problem. Perhaps a strong local magnetic source. I've been at airports where the radar will produce lines like this on video images. This could explain the randomness of the lines perhaps. Oh and Canon techs will always blame the lens especially if it ain't one of theirs !.
