Pardon my newb ignorance-- I'm using a Rode stereo video mic on my 5DII to record ambient sound in nature recordings, like Sunrise HD (whatever happened to those shows, btw?)
From my reading, I guess the issue is automatic gain control. I've set it to Manual, lowered the gain on the camera, but as the background hiss is reduced, so is the ambient sound I want to capture, so that doesn't seem like much of a solution.
Could this be resolved in a future firmware update? I plan on getting FCP or FCE in the future-- can I remedy it somewhat in PP? I understand the ideal is to have separate mixing, but I can't spring for any more equipment right now.
Any help would be appreciated, I'm heading out this weekend to do a bunch of recording outdoors.

you need a preamp or an amplifier to boost the signal to get a clean sound. look into juicelink or do off-camera recording.
