I am planning a short trip (3-4 days?) to Glacier Bay National Park, and am planning on doing the day cruise into the park, as well as the whale watching cruise. I am planning on renting a supertele, but am interested in recommendations on which one.

I suppose I am considering the 300/2.8 IS, the 400/4 DO, the 500/4 IS, and the two new ones (the 300 and 400 IS II, assuming the rental places have them by next summer.) I've never used a supertele in this class before.

Anyone have any recommendations? (I already have a 1.4x TC), and plan on using a sturdy monopod while on the boats, if/when handheld shooting is not practical. Since the boat will be filled with other gawkers/tourists, I don't anticipate being able to use a tripod very effectively.

Also, any recommendations on when to go?

Thanks!

:)
