Is the noise of the 580exii a significant issue with these TTL triggers?

Yes, they both work with the 580EX II. The issue with the 580EX II is the RF noise generated by it affecting the reception of the FlexTT5 as a receiver and at long distances. Most people have no issue using the combo in shorter distances.

The MiniTT1 has absolutely no issues with the 580EX II because the MiniTT1 can only be used as a transmitter and hence, not affected by the RF noise emitted by the flash.

I've had it beyond 400 ft. with the included shield. However, without it, it varies from model to model of the 580EX II and the surrounding environment.

I have issues with the RF in short range too (10 feet). Just use the shield it comes with and then you don't have issues.

Is the shield that comes with it that soft sack looking thing or is it a hard metal shield?

It's the soft sack with a hotfoot that grounds the screen woven into the sack.

I've been seeing 30-40 feet or so as the maximum reliable range for my 580EX II and FlexTT5. That's without he supplied sock and grounding foot. Interestingly, matters didn't improve much when I moved the Flex several inches away from the 580 using an off camera cord. The sock and grounding foot "solution" helps tremendously though I haven't measured the range improvement.

I've had an AC7 (PocketWizard's hard shield) on order for months but PW's supply chain seems to be missing a few links. B&H has changed the product listing from "7-14 days" to "no arrival date known". Hopefully, PW is redesigning the case to accommodate an external battery pack cable. What a boneheaded oversight!

Just been reading the below review.
It seems the European version's don't suffer very much from 580exii noise!
Guess this is why we don't get a free sock ???

"Nikon's Speedlights emit minimal range-reducing RF interference in LPA Design's testing, so this particular problem is restricted to Canon gear. Also note that it's principally the U.S./Canada version of the FlexTT5 that's impacted. The European FlexTT5 operates on a different set of frequencies, most (but not all) of which are outside the frequencies affected by the RF noise coming from the trio of Canon Speedlites. Also, the RF noise emitted by these flashes only interferes with signal reception; the range of a MiniTT1 transmitter is not reduced by placing any one of these Canon flashes in its shoe."

I would also be a little weary about using the AC5 sock. If you search, there have been issues using the 580exII and the sock shorting out the 580 somehow. I found this out AFTER I used the TT1 and TT5 with the AC5 sock and realized a week later that my 580 quick working in ETTL mode. Would fire a preflash, but nothing afterwards. Sent in for warranty and they are fixing it right now.

It hasn't been completely "proven" that the sock is the problem, but there have been alot of instances with me being one.

The RF shielding sock that's included with the TT5 seems to get rid of the (very) few issues I've had. Haven't used it at long distances, though.

There is another thread that addresses the 580EXII failures, including a link to the study that LPA did to determine what, if anything, was contributing to the failures.

I don't know the thread name but I'm sure a search will revel it.
