I currently use cs2 and am pretty happy with it but feel like I might be missing out. It is quite an investment for me so I was hoping to hear individuals opinions. thanks for your time

CS5 has some pretty nice features like quick select which essentially lets you brush a selection very fast.

I use LR 3 and PS Elements for anything that I couldn't do with LR, BUT.. I bought CS5 because of Content Aware. I don't think I'll ever learn all the features. I still go to Elements for some tasks which are easier to complete than in CS5

Lot of nice features since CS2. ACR & Bridge are much nicer. Also, typically upgrades can only go 3 versions back, so you won't be able to use the upgrade price whenever CS6 is released. Try out the demo and see for yourself.

One thing that has been updated since CS2 is the fact that you can now process jpegs and tiffs in Camera Raw, which had been available to only process Raw files. This has made a lot of jpeg shooters very happy because the ACR tools actually are very useful as "quick processing" tools that can do enough on a lot of your images that you won't need the extra "baggage" of going into Photoshop for many of your images.

The only person that knows if it is worth the price is you. We can line up all the changes since CS2 (and there are plenty) but only you know if you will use them. As has been suggested above, give the trial a test to see for yourself. The other decision that you have to make then is do you want the normal version or the extended. I personally think it is a program worth upgrading to. CS4 didn't bring that much to the table over CS3 but CS5 certainly did. Going from CS2 to CS5 you would see a huge improvement.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

IMHO, based on using PS since PS 7:

CS2 to CS5-- worth it.

CS4 to CS5-- save your money.

I used CS3 for years. CS4 didn't offer anything that I saw worth the money so I skipped it. CS5 had enough in it to get me. The Stamp tool alone is worth the upgrade price. And I'm still being amazed after a month of use.

Im in the same boat at the OP. Currently have CS2 however, i do have a secret on my hand. My friend is taking a photography class at the local community college and I now have access to the "student" discount. :)

The student discount is about the same price as doing the upgrade, so you won't gain anything, besides the fact that the Adobe license is probably being violated by someone who is not actually a member of your family/household giving away their license of the student edition to you.

A friend, who is a student, offered me this deal...they would purchase with their ID and hand me the box. Would I have issues registering llicense if I am not the student who purchased? I feel I'm doing something wrong just asking this question!

thanks

I don't know about "issues" with the rigistery of the install key, but you wouldn't be the legitimate owner -- for student discount versions you are prevented from transferring/selling to another person, it's part of the license agreement. I'm pretty firm myself about such stuff and would really say don't do it! Stick to the rules!

I would certainly hope so.
