580 EX II as master, Metz 58 as Slave issue

I set my 580ex II as the master and my Metz 58 AF-1c as slave and but did not get the results as I had expected.
My Metz flash would not sync. It fired what seemed to be a very low power pop a micro second after the 580. Sometimes not at all.

Anyone else experience this?

Thanks, that was interesting however I think I am having a different sort of issue.
I am not getting the master and slave to sync. I think my shutter was around 1/60th. Definitely not high speed.
