I heard my own rumour as I caught myself thinking there is going to be a Canon 3D which will be a weather proof version of the 5D2 or 3 or a cut down version of the 1Ds 3 or 4 (same thing really)

i.e. something exactly halfway between the 1Ds series and the 5D series, because boy I need a weatherproof camera but can't afford a 1Ds series and the 5D series leaks!

It wont have the super high MP count of the rumoured forthcoming 1Ds4 (35-45mp) but will be more than 21 of the current FF sensors

The most important new feature as far as the sensor goes is that it will have backlighting which will improve DR but better still it doesnt have an artificially increased write speed which is what prevents it being a true 16bit instrument. It will therefore have a reduced frame rate compared to similar cameras and be no where near the 1D4 whih will remain the prime PJ and sports camera

~24 megapixel full frame sensor, 5 frames per second, 7d style body (no portrait grip, good build quality, sealing), 7d auto focus, native 25600 iso for around $3500.

well, at least thats what i'm hoping for! probably won't happen until the 5dii quits selling out of stock everywhere

I believe right at this point in time a back lit sensor FF size is a thing of the future...like 10 years atleast. If anyone was going to make a back lit FF sensor it would be Sony. They said its impossible to make one that big.

I mean i guess if Canon came out with a back lit FF sensor..that would be cool. But its just not going to happen. Sony is the only company to actually implement back lit sensors right at this point in time. Hell if they make a 10MP 1/1.7mm back lit sensor, Id be dam near impressed! I amagin an S95 with a back lit sensor....yep thatd be a nice cam..

Anywho...let the rumor roll.

If the rumour of 28MP for the 5D3 is close to the mark, then a 3D will need to be at least the same and I'd personally expect it to be comfortably more, say 30-32MP.

Which of course begs the question of the 1Ds4 if it ever arrives. Because that must trump everything. Or be better at everything else than the opposition, something Canon have yet to manage. Pixel counts seem to be Canons preferred battle ground and I don't see that changing any time soon. Nor indeed do I want it to.

Perhaps the a 3D might be Canon's way of incorporating the 5D2 with something along the lines of a 7D's AF system, and as some kind of stop gap between the 5D series and the 1Ds, which will be even more mental

I doubt it will be around until next year sometime though

Alas we can only dream and speculate.

I don't really get Canon though, I simply don't understand why the AF off the 7D on even what the 5D2 is now would be a problem to do. It would surely make commercial sense, as it would make a mind blowing body I would be rushing out of the factory, even as what Nikon do, as something like the 5D2s or whatnot. I wouldn't grumble getting one, despite having bought two 5D2's. 21million pixels is more than enough for my needs for the time being, it just makes me glum the AF lets all the loveliness down in low light or in unexpected moments when using outer focusing points reliably would be cool

I don't really see how it would effect sales of the 1Ds series either; togs who use them do so for the obvious benefits they afford, and as I said the 1Ds4 should be on another level completely, which is why i'm rapping my fingers waiting for it

I have to admit that there has not been much progress made on AF point sensitivity since the Eos-3, which was way back in the 1990s. It is strange, given the progress in every other area.

I'd have expected AF sensitivity to have been at all apertures by now, not limited to f/5.6 or so.

Jahled,

No seriously, theres not been a single improvement. My Eos-3 can do everything more accurately and quicker than my 30D.

Cool; that is, as you point out, a little odd. My mate's got a 7D and whenever i've given it a go the AF points seem formidably more reliable than on my 5D2's; so i'm sort of amazed it something that hasn't been addressed since the nineties on some of their focusing systems. Nikon seem to put in some graft on their AF system, so what are Canon playing at on their high end bodies?

I've never used an EOS-3, so forgive me if I found that hilarious. But that is rather dump founding as well
