Specs
i7 860 2.80 gHz
1TB Western Digital HDD
Radeon HD 5760 Video Card
4gb ram
750w power supply

I've been organizing folders, and the largers ones are transerfering at a max of 25mb/s with nothing else running. It boggs down the computer, temps are in the mid 30's C
CPU useage is 1%
Memory usuage is 30ish %

Am I wrong to think there is something wrong here? I'm all above 7's on the WEI except 5.9 on data trasnfer rate, but 25mbs?

Help me!

Did you buy a 5400 RPM hard drive and not a 7200 RPM?

Did you take a look at the BIOS of this machine to see what the CPU clock speed is actually running at? Most motherboards have an option to set optimized defaults. Make sure you are running at the correct clock speed.

Is there a way to look at this without opening the computer. I know i had a 7200 but my HD got RMA'd last month and didn't think to double check

File transfers go slow for a few reasons. Most notably, slow-moving platters (4200RPM and 5400RPM) which make me want to shoot myself. But almost any mechanical drive will have a hard time transferring lots and lots of tiny little files at a time.

EG: copying one 4GB .rar file takes, say, 3min or so on a drive. If you were to unrar that archive file and instead had to copy all the little files instead, it might take 20-30min, if not longer.

Where do you see mention of 5400 RPM? I would think it's hard to find a 1 Tb WD 5400 RPM HD.

As Hen3Ry said, I would suspect basic BIOS settings. And 4gb of ram nowadays is considered marginal. I'd get a matched set for a total of 8gb. And get a second, data only drive... 2 gb.

Before I re-vamped this computer I had a 8800gt with 1gb ram and single core AMD processor and it was still faster at transfer, I only really upgraded because I was sick of waiting for photoshop processes and the time it took to load preview files of my RAWs in lightroom. I would have though i'd be blown away by the difference but i'm still left unsatisfied.

This makes the most amount of sense to me

The WD Green series drives are all 5400RPM.

And I sincerely doubt BIOS settings have anything to do with data transfer speeds. Those are all to do with drivers (software) and physical limitations of the involved hardware.

I'd also keep backups of all your important data. It's also possible you have a faulty drive that's on the verge of failure straight out of the box - it's happened before. Play it safe and back up anything you can't afford to lose.

Again, is there a way to check this without taking it out?

There was no mention of 5400 RPM drives, that is why I asked if he had bought one instead of a 7200 drive. If you aren't that sure of what you're buying it would be very easy to make that mistake.

WD has a couple of very popular 5400 1TB hard drives. People usually use them for NAS's and other storage where performance doesn't need to be the highest.

What color is the label? Maybe you can see without removing the drive. Or if it came with a box, I'd check that first :)
