hence, my new tripod... the Feisol CT-3442 with a min height of 54.3" is too tall if and when i use my gimbal...

of all the friggin obstacles... lol.:o

now what bugs me is that using a ballhead, it's fine... so... hmm...

shall i take it to a bandsaw and chop it up?

do you think feisol sells replacement leg sections and if so, are they interchangeable?

i know, just don't pull it out all the way... but is this the only recommended solution?

hahahah... thanks for advice on this silly issue... if any...

Albert,

If you leave the last section unextended, you'll have a more stable platform.

lol, +1 :) Easy to make tripods shorter but not so much if you need them to be taller!

Just buy the accessory wooden apple crate to stand on :) I had a vertically challenged photo instructor in college. His tripods were all marked with lines so that when he extended the legs he had intermediate stops marked that were equal on all 3 legs.

hahaha... apple crate?!?!

that's hilarious!

well, option 1 is to wrap an extension to the plastic sleeve so it does not pull out as much... trouble is finding a sleeve or rolling a sleeve to fit and stay put...

option 2 is to mark on the legs how far to pull out...

option 3... sigh... apple crate...

Simple solution is not to extend all of the sections out fully. Leave one section partially extended, problem solved.

Option 4 (and no marks needed):
Before spreading legs outward, extend one as long as needed and then stand the tripod on the ground on that leg, and then extend the other two legs down to the ground (making all three of equal length), finally spread the legs and set up your camera.

Look at the good side of it: your tripods will be cheaper! :D

my tripod is too tall for me also and it is a pain to have to figure out how far to pull the legs out.

wilt's option 4 is what i do. it takes some practice to figure out how much to pull the first leg out. just remember that as soon as you spread the legs, you lose some height.

For real, right?
I'm 5' 4" and have never felt my tripod was too tall, nor my monopod, I simply don't extend the last legs all the way. I do have a mark on them but really never use them since I'm rarely on level ground.

I have a similar problem with a manfrotto. I plan to make up some internal 'sleeves" for the bottom legs so they never extend fully.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

silly but yea... well... not extending all the way is the way to go...

but yea, for real... hahaha...

i'm going to fiddle around and see about getting a sleeve to put in there...
at least the feisol sleeve is thinner than gitzo... dunno if it's a good thing or not... but finding and bending sheet plastic to fit will be easier...

cheers!
