So, I submitted a photo to a magazine that prints quarterly in the midwest (KS) they contacted me and said they would like to commission one of my photos... quarter page. And that they pay $25. I feel that's kind of low, but also excited that they want one of my pictures. Is that not to uncommon?

I was just shooting for a calendar yesterday, one photo of the building for $200. $25 would be too low for me, but hey it's publication, right? Plus you submitted the photo to them and quarter page isn't bad at all!

I get $35-$100 per picture for a local newspaper. So, $25 sounds about right. It's more about being published than the $$ anyways :D

Drozz, you are 100% correct... $25 will buy gas to and from the next shoot... but now to be "Published" !!!

No, it's not about being published over the pay - sounds like trying to say it'd be just fine to get nothing as long as you get published, not true in any sense! That publication means nothing without pay, nobody cares one bit about it, no editors are reading the bylines unless they have to write them.

$25 is low, but kind of common in the lower magazine/newspaper ranges. The local rag is only $15 + travel, so about the same if you're shooting a local event and they're not paying for the travel. I know one national who pays less, so you take it or leave it.

MJ is right.. You have to make sure you get paid, but you'll never make a living off submitting to newspapers. I usually hand out cards to the players, coaches and parents. I typically make about $50-100 per game on top of the publication's pay.

I caught a large house fire a couple years ago and sent it to a couple papers just for kicks. One sent me 25.00 and one said thanks.
