I usually only shoot kids and babies but my nephew asked me to shoot some engagement pictures for him. Since I only have a point and shoot I borrowed my nephews Sony alpha 390. I practiced with it today with a AF 35-70 lens and some some decent shots, well to my untrained eye anyways. Wondering if you have any tips, do's or don'ts, or things you remember wishing you had done differently.

I also have a 70-210 beercan, 18-55, and a 50 mm. (Ive never shot with an SLR until this week so I don't really know anything about lenses or which is the best to use for what) I do understand aperture, shutter speed and all the basics of shooting though. Any help would be wonderful!

Here are 2 from today...please let me know what you think.

Watch your backgrounds. The subject exposure is good in the two shots you posted, but the background in the second shot is badly blown.

For me, I keep the list pretty simple. As Egordon says, stay mindful of what's in the background. Also, be deliberate about exposure, avoid mixed lighting, and shoot in bursts so a nice shot isn't ruined by a blink or poor expression. As far as posing goes, be free and easy. Don't over pose the couple; put them in a situation (on a bridge, walking down a path, leaning against a tree, etc.) and let them be themselves.
