Yes, I feel silly asking this so no need to rub it in, but I'm sure I'll get a helpful answer from someone here. What does the lock switch on the 7D do? The only mention I've found for it is on pg 37 and it says to make sure it's switched to </> which I assume is on. Further down the page if says I can do the same action even if it's switched to off.
I've had a bit of a play around and I can alter settings whether it's on or off. What am I missing here?

Aaaah thanks! I wouldn't have thought to google it, sometimes it's hard to know exactly what to search under and my first point of reference was the manual, which proved pretty scant in info, second was here..... of course.
