A local guy here in town is selling something interesting ( I would think) But I really don't know much about lighting.
I was considering picking up 2 lumopros in a 'starving student' deal on mpex.

Can anyone assist me in this? Would I be better off (as a beginner in using flashes for anything bigger then a quarter) grabbing the dual Lumopros, or is this Photoflex contraption a pretty solid deal?

I haven't seen any continuous lighting I'd consider buying. Under, 10k.
That's dollars, not kelvin.
Save for strobes, or get creative and develop your natural light skills until you can get strobes.

The high end continuous lighting is for video.. it would be great for stills, but costs WAY more money than strobes. Think movie production budgets.

You can dial in color temperature on the higher end models.

Student budget means strobes. :)

I've started looking at the Excalibur sets from BHPhoto after reading one of the FAQs listed here.
Any good advice on those? I'm looking at spending around $500 to start off, though a little change on top of that wouldn't break me completely (+50-100)

Looks like an imitation alien bees but even though some models are labeled 1600 it's akin to the b400 at 160ws.

I don't know if you're looking for a power pack too so you can use them outdoors. The interfit stellar heads are decent and 300ws head should suffice unless you are outdoors in bright light and are trying to overpower the sun. You could also look at a Calumet Genesis 400 1-Light Kit. At $500-600 you have quite a few options it just depends on how many strobes you want, if you want a power pack, and even what type of light modifiers you want.

2, perhaps some LMs, power pack can wait a bit. I'll take a look at Calumet though.
