Canon T1i with 50mm 1.8 Mk II
Manual
Aperture 6.3
Shutter 1/640
ISO 400
Shot in RAW; Minor crop and color adjustment in Canon's software.

After eight or so trips to the park to get this shot, I've finally got a good one with J running at me, in focus, with her ears open, and her eyes looking at me. I title it: "I'm Comin' Pa!", which is exactly what she's doing. I waited for the sun to rise, put J in a sit-stay facing it (so she was front-lit), then went and positioned myself in a drainage ditch to get level perspective. I did this a few times until I got this shot. I had selected 640 shutter (some previous at 1/500 blurred) and then adjusted the aperture to suit. Servo focus. Given the fair distance between J and the trees I would have thought to get a bit more isolation between the background , but I'll take it.

C/C welcome!

A beautiful picture of a happy dog. Well timed.
I think that the portrait format is more suitable and used a size which fits most frames. (I would rework the original photo as this is too small).

I blurred the backgroud and sharpened J to make it stand out. I could not resist your appropriate quote and felt compelled had to include it as well.

Amazing PD; thanks for taking the time and showing me a better way to frame the photo. I'd'a never thought of that. Next time I take the shot I'll have to rotate my camera, open the aperture and do this for real.

You took a wonderful picture here, well thought out and you clearly love your dog and he clearly loves you! I also couldn't resist playing with it a bit too - - - hope that's OK!

There are several ways to achieve the same results. Some are simple, some not. It depends on skill, your equipment and subject matter. Your planned method may achieve a similar result and maybe even better, but...

I would certainly rotate the camera. You can run into focusing problems with your wider aperture. As the dog is coming towards you, you do not need high shutter speeds. IMHO, I think it is much simpler if you use your best aperture to achieve the best DOF and let your camera deal with speed. The manipulation took less than 15 minutes. Had it been a higher resolution picture, I would have been more meticulous and maybe spend another 10 minutes to achieve accuracy.
