I had some reservations about buying a non-Canon lens, but at the recommendation of a few people here, I decided to bite the bullet and get the Tamron 17-50 f2.8. I shot a car I just finished building today. Its so amazing how much better this lens is than the standard 18-55 lens that came with my Rebel.
I only have to save up $2000 more to get my 70-200 f2.8 IS unit. :(

Yes, the Tammy 17-50 f2.8 is amazing. I got one used for $260 and it is by far the best $260 I've spent on a lens.

Not sure why you called the 70-200 f/2.8 IS a UNIT. But congratulations on your purchase.

Not sure how it compares, but I just picked up my Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 macro. I like it a heck of a lot more than the non-IS kit lens.

I used to have one and it was extremely sharp. Great lens for the price!
