G12 Fail

I've spent the last three weeks hunting down a retailer that had Canon's G12 in stock and finally, today, found success. I spent a good part of the day stabbing this thing at various scenes and snapping away. It's a great little shooter.

Problems arose when I got home and downloaded what I'd shot. Other than the Canon ImageBrowser nothing recognized the RAW files I'd uploaded from the camera. Nothing includes: Mac Preview, Mac iPhoto, Photoshop E8 nor the Digital Photo Professional program that came with the software bundle.

After deleting the entire series, re-importing and seeing the same bit of fail I shot some random photos in jpeg and those images were recognized fine.

I'll be contacting Canon asap about this but thought I'd dangle this issue here to see if I'd overlooked something obvious.

DPP must open the files. Install DPP from the CD and then download the last update online. Canon needs to process its own files, if it doesn't you have a problem in your PC.

Raw camera support for Macs are part of the OS and are part of a software update.

Thanks but I've already got DPP installed via my Rebel. I've reinstalled it via the G12 software bundle and I'll see if that solves the issue.

Different RAW codec for the G12 than your Rebel. You need to install from the G12's disc.

Thanks again. I've installed the G12 DPP and DPP recognizes the files but PSE8 does not. Probably have to manually upgrade PSE8's Adobe RAW? Of course now that DPP recognizes the G12 files does this mean the Rebel files won't be recognized? I'll figure it out. Thanks much for your help!

DPP is backwards compatible so if it recognizes the G12 it should recognize any camera produced earlier. You can convert your RAW to 16 bit tiffs in DPP and then edit in PSE8. DPP is actually a very good RAW developer in terms of IQ.
In case it helps I´m using DxO Optics to develop RAWs and I really like it, but I´m not sure if it already supports the G12.

Besides the file processing pains how do you like your new G12?

The update for ACR/PS8 to recognize the G12's RAW files probably isn't out yet, may take a couple month's before it happens.

@luigis Thanks and converting to TIFF is an extra step but not that big a headache. It's a marvelous little shooter and I think it'll do nicely as a "bring it everywhere" replacement to lugging around my dslr and lenses.

@10megapixel makes sense, and thanks for your help.

same thing happened to me with the Nikon P-7000...happened with the Canon S-95 in the store when I went back with the camera and the Lumix ... forget the model number now, it was the "5" that replaced the "3"...anyway point is, my I-Mac would not recognize the files and couldn`t get them into i-Photot nor upload to Photobucket.
Guess I`ll have to wait for the PC companies to catch up to the latest cameras.

If you go through Lightroom, there is a plug-in you can use that modifies the exif to make it look like a G11 raw file, which is supported in LR & PS. Google around for it, I don't have the link handy.

Support for the G12 will surely be in the next release of ACR, which I've heard is supposed to be quarterly, so not too far off.

How is this a fail? This happens with every major camera that comes out. Just wait a few weeks for the Camera RAW update on your computer and everything will be fine.

This.

It's not a failure of Canon if they supply you with software to handle the camera's files, but you have to wait a bit for the big guys (Apple, Adobe etc) to release an update which handles the files too. Really not a very realistic expectation to expect a fresh off the block camera to work perfectly with everything...

Cheers, Dave.
