I'm willing to upgrade my old 17" Samsung Syncmaster monitor as it nows shows it shortcomings when doing PP (I mean that only now MY knowledge in PP shows it :))

Reading the forum I come out with this 2 options as logical ones in terms of size (22ish), technology (IPS or VA) and cost (500ish in Switzerland). I can't find the gammut of the NEC but I guess is as well 100% of sRGB.

What would be your recommendation/ideas regarding these monitors? Other better options out there? Any comments or help will be appreciated

Thanks! Alejandro

You are comparing a good consumer level monitor with an entry level professional monitor. The Dell is an 8 bit monitor which can only be calibrated via the video card. The NEC P2221W has a 10 bit internal LUT which can be calibrated directly. NEC offers a proprietary calibration system for its professional level monitors. (It's different in Europe than North America, so check with your regional NEC distributor.)

The NEC is a wide gamut display (96% of Adobe RGB) while the Dell U2311h is normal gamut (sRGB). Between the two, the NEC is the winner.

it really looks like that the NEC IS the winner. Thanks!

regarding the calibration. I have an Spyder 3... do you know if it works ok with the NEC? Though I guess won't take advantage of the LUT)

NEC says that the Spyder3 hardware may be used with their own software. I would see if you can download the NEC Spectraview II or BasicColor software... whichever one NEC offers in your part of the world.

Here in the U.S., NEC offers the Spectraview II software, combined with a specially manufactured X-Rite sensor, tuned for calibrating nEC wide gamut monitors.
