Portrait I took of my girlfriend yesterday.

Not too sure about the cropping if it is too tight. I'm new to portraiture as I like to spend my time photographing landscapes.

Any C&C would be appreciated.

I agree on the softness. In my LR it looks very sharp, and as soon as I export it goes soft. All settings were maxxed out.

I was using the 50mm 1.8 I believe!

Sorry but when you say down and to the right.

Do you mean crop off the top and the left side?

I shot wide open from memory.

I don't understand if my LR is playing tricks on me in the preview window before I export - or if it's just soft because I shot wide open.

Hmm!

Cheers for the tips by the way :)

because you shot wide open, the 50 has sharpness issues at 1.8 next time try 2.8 instead

here is an example of the 50 at 2.8

its sharp and you still get the bokeh your looking for @ 2.8

Yeah wow, huge difference.

Do you think the 50 1.8 would be sharper at 2.8 than my Tamron 17-50 at 2.8? One would assume as the Tamron is wide open.

Cheers for the tip, new to portrait stuff!

im not really familiar with the Tamron, but a buddy of mine has told me that canon vs. competition lenses will always own the copetition. The focusing motors will be built better and work better with the canon, there is a reason Tamron and the other lenses are cheaper. Bu that is hear say i have not experienced this for myself. No problem on the help, i know i wanted it when i was in your shoes.

I hope you dont mind but playing with curves in PS brought up your exposure and added to the sharpness of your photo, also when its just a softness issue, last resort you can always unsharpen mask in the sharpen filter on PS........

No don't mind at all. That looks great!

I'm more used to using lightroom for photo developing - but I have had extensive use in photoshop before so maybe I should change back.

The real right eye has just missed focus, although I agree that a great looking shot except for that.
