I was looking into that camera as well before I bought my Dig Rebel (300D) I liked the fact that it was 8 MP, and I've heard that Olympus is a pretty respectable company. But I do not regret buying a Canon by any means. The XT has the same ammount of MP as the Olympus but with the Canon there are so many options for lenses flashes and other things. I don't tink Olympus stands a chance in that department. The only downer about the XT (to me) is it's size. Just make sure that she can hold it easily without any problems. Oh, and I believe the sensor on the Olympus is a 2.0 crop while the XT is a 1.6 crop. So it will be easier to get telephoto with the olympus, but damn near impossible to get a really wide angle.

With that being said, I'd go with the Canon. No contest.

Her coming from film SLRs may not like the tiny viewfinder of the Evolt. I'd sugget she take her film SLR and compare to different models in a store.

And as far as ghaleon109 saying "damn near impossible to get really wide" I believe Olympus has put out a 7mm-something for wide angle shots.

I've edited this, I looked through an Evolt for the first tme today and what you see through the viewfinder is huge compared to my Drebel. Looks like it's as big as my EOS-3 film camera! Now why hasn't Canon done this to their 1.6x dSLRs instead of leaving with a cropped out viewfinder? Olympusu must magnifiy the viewfinder to make it as big as a full-frame. Shame on Canon!

There was a write-up comparison in last months PC Photo Magazine. The Digital Rebel XT was reviewed as being quiet a bit better than the E-volt in actual picture quality.
