Lenses

A great body with a poor lens on it will still take poor pictures. A lesser body with the best glass on it will take great pictures, it just may be a little more difficult to capture the photo. The body vs lens debate gets a little muddled with the fact that the sensor(film)is part of the purchase with a camera body in the digital age. But in general a good to great lens will still have the largest effect on your photo's quality. In film days, you could put the same film in your camera as the pros used in their pro camera, put great glass on any film camera and you should be able to capture the same photo as the big boys.
I went through this same debate with my film camera, I though if I just purchased the A2 over the Elan I would be taking great photos. I made the mistake of pairing it with a Tamron 28-200 lens that was absolutely the limiting factor in my photos. I moved up to a Canon lens, and from there a Canon L lens, each time I noticed a definite difference in photo quality.

Thanks to everyone for their great advice. After looking at the Rebel, it seems a no brainer. I just have to decide which lenses to start with. It looks like the package deal with the 17-85 kit is a good place to start. I'll add on later as my familarity with the camera increases. Is this a good lense?

I have the 17 - 85 & like it. Not many Canon lenses have a range like that, and the IS helps.
